  • Boyd votes to prohibit release of rescue funds

    Citing the lack of accountability and oversight in the implementation of the financial rescue package, Congressman Allen Boyd (D-North Florida) today voted to prohibit the release of the remaining rescue funds through the Troubled Assets Relief Program, which became law last October. Under the TARP legislation, the U.S. Treasury Department was provided $350 billion last fall to stabilize the financial industry, and the remaining $350 billion would only be provided after Congressional authorization.

  • City phone numbers changed

    If you want to contact anyone at Quincy City Hall, the new number is 681-0200.

    The city of Quincy's telephone system is almost complete. The staff, said John Thomas, information technology director, has addressed all of the technical problems. The information technology department began designing the system in October of last year.

  • City, county still debating over new fire contract

    There is still no fire contract between Gadsden County and the city of Quincy beyond March and Tuesday night, during the regular meeting of the city commissioners, two officials made it clear that if there is no contract they don't want the fire engines to roll beyond the stipulated 5-mile radius.

  • County’s representatives take a look at what’s needed, what’s available

    In anticipation of economic stimulus funds, Gadsden County officials presented the first draft of its package to the Legislative Delegation last Thursday evening. Sen. Al Lawson, along with representatives Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda and Alan Williams, listened as Gadsden County Commission Chairman Eugene Lamb outlined the proposed infrastructure projects the county needs funded.

    "If funding is available, we are requesting that you do whatever you can to help us," Lamb said.

    • First Baptist Church in Quincy holds Sunday School each week at 9:45 a.m., followed by worship at 10:55. Sunday evening worship begins at 6 p.m. Sunday morning worship services are broadcast on Sunday events at 6 p.m. on 93.3 FM.

    The church has scheduled a Lay Renewal Weekend for Feb. 27 - March 1. All groups will be led by a christian lay team from across north Florida. For more information, call the church office at 627-9688.

  • We waited to provide you the local perspective

    I received a phone call last week regarding our front page. I was not in when the person called, however, I was given the message soon after I returned.

    The person’s beef? Our front page didn’t have our new president’s photo on it. I spoke with the person, and I have to say, she was quite pleasant as she made her case. We wished one another “good day” and the conversation ended.

  • Reader admires new president’s delivery of inauguration speech

    Did you listen to how President Barack Obama said the word "ask" during his inauguration speech? He said "ask" not "ax." (An "ax" is a chopping or cutting tool. "Ask" means "to call on for an answer."

    If a person says "I am going to ax someone," it sounds like they are getting ready to attack somebody.

    Set aside politics for a minute and listen to how Obama speaks correctly.

    On this matter, I think we should emulate him.

  • My day for twins has finally arrived

    I was sitting on a life guard stand in 1962 when Gray Oliver walked around the corner. She was 6 or 7 and I thought, “What a cute little kid!” Before I could blink another one just like her appeared right behind her! I fell off the stand. They both strolled right up to me. “Are you the life guard?”

    “No, I’m an alien left here when the space ship from Nona took off without me. Are y’all twins?”

  • Tallavana, Munroe take wins

    Both the Tallavana Christian School and Robert F. Munroe boys basketball teams had success Friday night.

    The Tallavana Lions won a home game against Gateway Baptist while Munroe’s Bobcats defeated Maranatha in Tallahassee.

    Grant Braynen led a contingent of four Tallavana players in scoring in their 65-62 win. The Lions led most of the game but had to hold off a late Gateway charge.
