  • High school hoops heat up this week

    Anyone who follows East Gadsden basketball, knows the season is just getting started.
    And the Jaguars face a critical district matchup this week.
    East shares a five-team district with Godby, Taylor County, Florida State High School and Madison County. The Jaguars have already beaten Taylor County and Madison County and face Godby at home on Saturday, Jan. 7.
    Godby, 12-1, has pretty much had its way in the Big Bend Region, with its only loss coming to Summit Christian, a private school from Palm Beach County.

  • Panthers pull off - come from behind - O.T. win

    Everyone who has followed West Gadsden High School basketball knows the Panthers come out fast and pile up the points and generally control the game.
      After all, six of the varsity players were part of Quincy's Florida X-Treme team, which took the 2011 Disney Classic Championship.
      But this team also proved last week, it knows how to come from behind.

    The grand opening for Creek Entertainment Gretna was held Dec. 17 under clear skies. The chill in the air did nothing to undermine the excitement in the air as hundreds attended t.
    "This is a great day for Gretna. This is a new beginning for bringing growth to our city and jobs, not just for Gretna citizens for people in this area. We are looking forward to a growing and prospering city," said city manager Antonio Jefferson.

  • Panther roar in win over East

    There may be more exciting games played at East Gadsden this season, but it's not likely.
       Last Saturday night's clash between the Jaguars and the Panthers was high school basketball at its best.
       From the sidelines it was everything you can want: nonstop action, amazing plays, outstanding individual
    efforts, animated coaches, raucous fans and some questionable calls.
       And with a girls game and JV action just before the main event, the place was packed.

  • Jaguars magical season ends at Bolles

    The magical football season of East Gadsden High School ended on a damp night in Jacksonville.
      The journey took the Jaguars from the hellish hot practice days of August through more than three months of football.
       They had faced all types of teams while winning their district and regional titles. Their 10-2 record had earned them the right to face Bolles High School, one of the best football teams in the state.

  • East Gadsden beats Yulee for regional title

    It was a little different when the Yulee Hornets came to East Gadsden last week, they had been predicted to win the regional title.
    They rolled in with a highly rated running back, big Derrick Henry, who could play quarterback and kick with a strong supporting cast.
    A missed field goal cost East its first chance to get on the board, but minutes later they earned a safety as a bad snap ended up in the end zone when the Hornets attempted a punt.
    And the first quarter ended 2-0 in favor of East.

  • Divers recover body of fisherman

    The body of a 35-year-old Jimmy Donaldson, Jr., the Gadsden County man missing from Lake Talquin since late Friday night, Nov. 16, was recovered Monday, Nov. 21, around 5 p.m. Family and friends had kept vigil since Donaldson's boat capsized in choppy waters and high winds  Friday night, Nov. 18. Both Donaldson and his uncle, Claude Jackson, were thrown into lake. The boat was found Saturday but no sign of Donaldson.

  • Creek Entertainment Gretna gets ready to race

    Creek Entertainment Gretna unveiled its state-of-art barrel racetrack at Creek Entertainment Gretna on Wednesday during the first trials at the facility’s newly constructed barrel racing track.

    The track is the first competitive barrel-racing track of its kind in Florida and operators of the facility said Wednesday the plan is to begin competitive barrel racing and wagering as early as December 17.
