  • Dukes Jr., Matthew

    Matthew Dukes Jr., 76, of Marianna, died June 8, 2009 in Marianna.

    Services were held June 13 at Williams Funeral Chapel, with burial in Sunnyvale Cemetery.

    Survivors include his wife, Beulah Dukes of Marianna; sons, Bobby Dukes and LeAnthony Dukes of Quincy and Charles Florence of Newport News, Va.; daughters, Regina Dukes of Quincy and Shirley Hicks of Tallahassee; sister, Annie Laura Watkins of Quincy; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

  • Grant, Ethel Mae

    Ethel Mae Grant, 86, of Wetumpka, Ala., died May 30, 2009 at the home of her daughter.

    Born Oct. 1, 1922 in Miller’s Ferry, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, J.D. Grant; parents, William Henry and Jessie mae Thames Forehand; and son, Jimmy Donald Grant. She was a member of Quincy Community Church in Quincy.

    Funeral services were held June 2 at Peel Funeral Home Chapel in Bonifay, with burial in the Bonifay City Cemetery.

  • Hobbs Sr., James

    James Leonard Hobbs Sr. died May 27, 2009 in Panama City.

    A private family service will be held at a later date.

    Born in Tallahassee, Hobbs was a lifetime resident of this area. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Florida Department of Natural Resources, and was a member of the Tallahassee Carvers Club. He love to hunt and fish, and was proud of his Native American heritage.

  • Youmans, Willie L.

    Willie L. Youmans, 95, of Quincy, died May 31, 2009 in Tallahassee. 

    She was a member of St. Hebron AME Church.  Services were held June 6 at St. Hebron, with burial in the church cemetery.

  • McGee, Laura H.

    Laura Harris McGee, 79, of Quincy, died June 3, 2009 in Tallahassee. She was a Gadsden County native.

    Services were held June 8 at Stewart Temple AME Church with burial at the church cemetery.

    Survivors include her son, Warren W. Harris of Quincy; daughters, Betty Hodges of Atlanta, Ga. and Frances Harrell of Quincy; nephew, Howard Green of Jacksonville; cousin, John Edward Hatley of Quincy; seven grandchildren and a host of other family members and friends.

     

  • Glisson, Starling

    Starling Glisson, 78, died May 23, 2009 in Tallahassee.

    Born in Faceville, Ga. Jan. 6, 1931, he had lived in Quincy most of his life. He was a retired meat market manager. He served 4 years in the U.S. Navy.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Ambress and Annie Pearl Peacock Glisson; brothers, Joe, Jack and D. W. Glissson; sister, Margaret Glisson Woodard; and son, David Glisson.

  • Dodson, William S.

    William Selden Dodson died May 25, 2009, fittingly, on Memorial Day. Funeral services wer held May 30 at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Tallahassee, with a graveside service at Hillcrest Cemetery in Quincy.

  • Jones, Marrie

    Marrie Jones, 77, of Chattahoochee, died May 18, 2009 in Chattahoochee.

    Services were held May 23 at Greater Bethel Church in Chattahoochee, with burial at UBA Cemetery.

  • Hogue, John

    John Wesley Hogue, 89, of Quincy, died May 24, 2009 in Quincy.

    Funeral services were held May 30 at Bethlehem MB Church, with burial at Springfield Cemetery.

  • Smith, Audrey

    Audrey Isabella Smith, 83, died May 26, 2009 in Tallahassee.

    She is survived by her husband, W.L. Smith Jr.; sister, Patricia Weathers of Ireland; and several nieces and nephews.

    A graveside service was held May 28 at Roselawn Cemetery.
