• Brown, Dorothy

    Dorothy Frances “Dottie” Brown was born May 23, 1918 in Chicago, Ill., and died May 1, 2009.

    Funeral services were held May 4 at Bevis Funeral Home in Tallahassee, with interment in Woodville Cemetery.

    Brown had lived in Tallahassee for the past 45 years, and prepared plat maps for First American Title Co., and she and her former husband operated the Tallahassee Drive-in at Four Points. She was Catholic.

  • West, Robert

    Robert Dexter West, 29, of Quincy, died May 2, 2009 in Tallahassee.

    Services were held May 9 at James A. shanks Middle School, with burial in Williams Cemetery.

    Survivors include his wife, Takisha West of Quincy; sons, Joel West and Jerimiah West, both of Quincy; father, Robert West, and mother, Alma West, both of Quincy; grandparents, Herschel Robinson, Robert West Sr. and Annie West, all of Quincy; and sister, NaTosha Clemons (Antonio) of Bristol, Va.

  • Johnson, Willie Mae

    Willie Mae Johnson, 77, of Quincy, died April 24, 2009 in Tallahassee.

    Services were held May 2 at St. James AME Church, with burial at Sunnyvale Cemetery.

    Survivors include her sons, Jimmy Thomas (Gwendolyn) of Tallahassee and Irvin Fields of Quincy; daughters, Dorothy West, Daryl Johnson and Arlington R. Riles, all of Quincy, and Gayla Bryant (Terry) of Pensacola; daughter-in-law, Eartha Johnson of Quincy; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

  • Ware, Gene

    Gene Ware, 79, of Climax, Ga., died April 25, 2009 at Grady General Hospital in Cairo, Ga.

    Born Feb. 2, 1930, he was born in Quincy, and lived there most of his live until moving to Climax in 1990. He was parts manager for M&M Tractor Co. in Quincy for 19 years, and started Ware’s Auto and Farm Supply in Climax in 1978.

  • Stewart, Nellie

    Nellie Stewart, 92, of Hollywood, died April 27, 2009 in Fort Lauderdale.

    Services were held May 4 at Bear Creek Bethel Church, with interment in Sunnyvale Cemetery.

    Survivors include her son, Johnny Stewart; sisters, Ida Bell-Hill Williams (Hezekiak) and Eliza Jane Smith of Quincy; six grandsons and eight great-grandchildren.


  • Wilson, Janet

    Janet Wilson, 69, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died April 28, 2009 in Cincinnati.

    Funeral services were held May 5 at New Bethel AME Church, with burial in Campground Cemetery.


  • Mitchell, James

    James T. Mitchell of Quincy died April 29, 2009 in Tallahassee.

    Funeral services were held May 6 at St. Hebron AME Church, with burial in St. Hebron Cemetery.

    Survivors include his wife, Vivian J. Mitchell of Quincy; son, Virgil Mitchell of Midway; daughter, Alonzetta Simpkins (Steve) of Quincy; brothers, Clifford Jackson of San Jose, Calif. and Willie Mitchell (Carolyn) of Quincy; sisters, Lillie Houston of Syracuse, N.Y., Annie Lee Jones of Edison, Ga., and Ira Dean Cole (Isaiah) and Annette Youman (Henry), both of Quincy; and five grandchildren.

  • Mickens, Gladys

    Gladys J. Mickens, 75, of Quincy, died April 19, 2009 in Quincy.

    Funeral services were held April 25 at St. Hebron AME Church, with burial in St. Hebron Cemetery.

    Survivors include a sister, Inez F. Robinson of Quincy; sister-in-law, Ida Favors of Quincy; goddaughter, Katherine Stevens of Pensacola; and a host of relatives and friends.

  • Lawson Sr., H.C.

    H.C. Lawson Sr., 89, died April 19 2009 at his home in Tallahassee.

    Services were held at Fellowship Baptist Church in Tallahassee, with burial in Oakland Cemetery.

    Lawson was a native of Seminole County, Ga., and moved to Tallahassee in 1938. He retired as service manager for Tallahassee Bottling Company and spent more than 40 years with the Coca-cola Company. He and his family were charter members of the Fellowship church.

  • Nix, Bertha

    Bertha Lee Hosey Nix, 100, died April 21, 2009 in Blountstown.

    Born April 15, 1909 in Seminole County, Ga., she moved to Gadsden County in 1946.

    A graveside service was held April 25 at Providence Cemetery near Greensboro.
