Gadsden County prepares for Tropical Storm Karen

-A A +A

Gadsden County is taking precautions as Tropical Storm Karen maintains strength in the Gulf of Mexico. The current forecast is that Tropical Storm Karen is maintaining its maximum wind speed of 65 mph, but has slowed movement. Tropical Storm Karen is expected to make landfall within the next 48 hours.

No evacuation or emergency orders are in effect at this time.

Gadsden County officials want to make sure all necessary steps are taken to ensure the safety of all citizens in the event of severe weather.

The Gadsden County Public Works Department will be on hand to provide sand bags to the public. Citizens can pick up their bags until 3:00 p.m. today. There will be someone available to help load the bags if necessary. The bags will be located at 1090 Post Plant Road, Quincy, FL. There is a 20 bag limit per vehicle

The Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office also wants to make sure residents are aware of the County’s special needs shelters. A special needs shelter provides more care and supervision than a general shelter to help meet your special needs during the event of severe weather or evacuation. If you need assistance with medication, electricity for life support, basic nursing care, oxygen therapy or assistance to evacuate, the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office urges the residents of Gadsden County to seek out a special needs shelter in case of an emergency.

To register for a special needs shelter, contact Tashonda Whaley at (850) 875-8833
