  • Lady Cats defeat Liberty County

    The Robert F. Munroe Lady Cats softball team lost a close one, lost a 10-run rule contest and won a close one all in the opening week of the season. 

    On a cool Monday night the team succumbed in the bottom of the seventh 9-8 at Rickards.  Leading 4-1 in the third the Lady Cats gave up six runs, five on errors, and left the inning down 7-4. 

    The team posted four runs in the top of the fifth and gave up one.  The sixth inning was scoreless and the team could not push a run across in the top of the seventh.

  • Munroe off to 3-1 baseball start

    The Robert F. Munroe baseball team won its first three games of the season before running into Maclay Monday.

    The Bobcats defeated Altha 12-2 Feb. 16, knocked off Blountstown 31-3 on the 17th and bested Wewahitchka 15-11 on the 20th.

    Brock Hinson was the winning pitcher against Altha with a one-hit, nine strike-out performance.

    Clay Kramm was the top hitter for Munroe with three hits. Miller Joyner, Sam Young and Alex Gay slapped two hits each. Joyner poked a double and a triple and knocked in four runs.

  • West Gadsden splits in baseball

    West Gadsden High School defeated Blountstown 13-4 last Thursday and lost to John Paul II 12-3 Monday night as they began baseball play.

    In the Blountstown game, Quantez Houge was the winning pitcher, going six innings and fanning 14.

    Demarcus Richardson had three hits for the Panthers and Houge, Brandon Moore and Devontez Travis had two each. Houge drove in three runs and scored four times.

    West Gadsden got only one hit in the John Paul II game. The Tallahassee team's Patrick O'Neil was the winning pitcher. He also hit a home run and had six RBIs in the game.

  • WGHS boys only team to advance

    The West Gadsden High School Panthers are the only county team to make it out of the district playoffs in boys FHSAA basketball.

    The team defeated Wewahitchka in a semifinal District 3-2A game on Friday night in Wewahitchka after trailing by 11 points late in the third period. The Panthers made a strong run the last 12 minutes of the contest, pulling out a 59-42 win.

    Guards John Battles and Jesse Winbush led the spurt with quick scores off of steals. Battles finished with 22 points and Winbush hit 17. Mario Williams added 10 to the Panther total.

  • Local girls teams fall in...

    Both the Lady Bobcats at R. F. Munroe and East Gadsden High School’s Lady Jaguars were eliminated from the playoff picture when both teams lost in the girls semifinals.

    Most surprising was the upset of the East Gadsden girls basketball team by Godby by a 48-47 score at Bay High School in Panama City. This loss marked the first time since the school opened in 2003 that the team had not made the state playoffs.

  • Second-half spurt carries...

    The West Gadsden High School Panthers put up quite a bit of first-half resistance. When things were all said and done, East Gadsden had too much height and depth for the Panthers and the Jaguars came away with an 80-43 win in a county rival basketball game Thursday night.

    Behind the play of John Battles, Jesse Winbush and Antonio Bostick, West Gadsden stayed close in the first half.

    East Gadsden came out in the second half, took over the boards, hit some outside shots and closed down things defensively to collect their second win of the year over the Panthers.

  • Local athletes ink college deals

    West Gadsden High School’s Gary Brown and East Gadsden High’s Lance Ray signed scholarships with Southeastern Conference universities last Wednesday on the first day of signings.

    Brown a 6-feet, 4-inch, 280-pound defensive lineman inked with national champion, the University of Florida, in a 10 a.m. ceremony.

    Ray a 6-feet, 1-inch, 180-pound wide receiver, signed with Arkansas just two hours earlier.

    Both players made All-State in their respective classes and both qualify academically.

  • County athletes named to All-...

    Munroe edges Poplar Springs

    Tommy Murray hit a free throw with time expired to give the Robert F. Munroe Bobcats a 44-43 win over Popular Springs last Thursday. Murray's free throw ended a back-and-forth game and gave the Bobcats their seventh win of the year.

    Murray finished the night with 18 points. He also picked off 16 rebounds.

    Murray had another double-double Friday night with an 11-point, 13-rebound game at Rocky Bayou. Munroe lost that game 61-55.

  • County athletes named to All-...

    Gary Brown from West Gadsden High School was named to the Class 1-A All-State first team last week. The 6-foot, 4-inch, 290-pound Brown was selected as a defensive lineman on the squad.

    Three members of the West Gadsden team made the second team. Antonio Bostick was selected at quarterback, while Anthony Hubert made it as a defensive lineman and Pablo Escobar was name to the team as a kicker.

    Lance Ray from East Gadsden High was selected to the Class 3-A second team at a wide receiver spot.

  • Area girls hoops teams gear up...

    This week Florida girls basketball participates in the district tournament that either ends their seasons or kickstarts it into the state playoffs.

    Hopefully, last week was no indication for the West Gadsden Lady Panthers as to how they will perform in districts.  The Panthers dropped three last week.  

    The team lost to North Florida Christian 50-46. Keundria Wright scored 18 points and Bridae White pulled down a whopping 30 rebounds. Jasmine Charleston added 13 rebounds and LeKendra Crittenden chipped in 13 points.
