    For the very first time in two years, I got to go fishing with my friend Bill Allen. He took me to his best jack fish hole and gave me his best bait. I almost froze to death. It took hours under an electric blanket to get thawed out. He was absolutely disgusted with me. I never caught a jack fish, but he took two and we together took seven bass. Wow, what a day. I must do it more often.

  • Local athletes to rep county in...

    The inaugural Florida-Georgia Senior Football Bowl, set for this weekend, will feature nine Gadsden County athletes.

    The game will be played at Thomas County Stadium in Thomasville this Saturday, with a kickoff time of 2 p.m.

    The game involves seniors from North Florida and South Georgia who have not committed to any college.

    Gadsden County is well represented on the Florida roster with four players from East Gadsden High School, four from West Gadsden High and one from Robert F. Munroe on the squad.

  • Jags win 2 in Chipola, gear up...

    The Munroe Lady Cats dropped three games in the Maclay Holiday Hoops Tournament.

    In their opening contest the Lady Cats were blasted by eventual tournament finalist Lincoln High School, 58-21. Lincoln led 31-17 at the half.

    A host of Lady Cats had a smattering of points. Courtney Mayo scored seven points and Anna Dooner scored six points. Dooner also pulled down five rebounds. Carrie Scott dished out five assists and Kristen Allen finished with five steals.

  • Jags win 2 in Chipola, gear up...

    East Gadsden High School won both their games in last weekend’s Chipola Classic played in Marianna.

    The Jaguars defeated Marianna in overtime Friday night and came back to clip Malone Saturday night.

    “It was a hard-fought game against Marianna,” Jaguar coach Demetric Salters said. “They are well-coached and are hard to beat in the Chipola Gym. But we held in there and played well in the overtime period.”

    East Gadsden outscored the Bulldogs 11-3 in the extra period, breaking away from the 57 all-regulation tie.

  • Lady Panthers fall to Sneads,...

    In limited basketball action last week because of exams and early release for the Christmas holidays, West Gadsden lost to Sneads by a 56-46 score. Sneads led 34-23 at the half.

    The Panthers did manage a small run in the fourth quarter outscoring the Pirates 10-8. West Gadsden did have three players in double figures but got scoring from only five players. Kayla Streeter led all scorers with 17 points. Cydavia Warner scored 13 points and Lakendra Crittendon added 10. Bridae White hauled down 11 rebounds and four blocked shots and Streeter had four steals.

  • Student-athletes honored during...

    The annual fall sports banquet at Robert F. Munroe Day School was held Dec. 11.

    The three sports recognized for awards were golf, football and volleyball. The coaches of the varsity teams each spoke during the presentations about the season highlights.

    Golf coach was Kevin Smith, and the football coach was RFM alumnus Adam Reep. The volleyball coach was Makini Thompson.

  • East Gadsden High soccer going...

    The East Gadsden High School soccer team is having an outstanding year. The team was 8-1 going into a Monday night game with district foe Bay. The Jaguars defeated Godby 2-1 and South Walton 3-0 in games last week.

    Doug Stephens is in his second year as the team’s head coach. Stephens guided the Jaguars to a 6-6-5 mark last year.

    Seniors Jose Hernandez and Ernesto Quintanilla and freshman Willie Molena have been the catalyst for East Gadsden thus far.

  • Deloney pops 29 to lead Jags...

    Leonardo Deloney found the West Gadsden Gym to his liking Saturday night.

    The quick shooting Jaguar guard popped in 29 points to lead West Gadsden to a 93-65 win over the Panthers.

    "We jumped out pretty quick and managed to control things," East Gadsden coach Demetric Salters said.

    Kevin Derrico and Martericus Thomas joined Deloney in double-figure scoring as each put in 14.

    East Gadsden has a 4-1 overall record and will compete in the Chipola Classic this weekend.

  • Munroe tops Aucilla in double...

    The Robert F. Munroe Bobcats boys basketball team did not seem quite ready for the holiday break as they took extra time to end their pre-break season Friday night in Aucilla. The extra time paid off and the Bobcats head into the holidays with a 61-58 double overtime win over the Warriors.

    Munroe was led by Christian Granger, John Hilton Revel and Tommy Murray with 23, 12 and 11 points. Murray was tops with 15, while Sam Young had eight. Young also had six steals.

  • Girls hoops: EGHS wins, Lady...

    East Gadsden wins two district contests

    The East Gadsden Lady Jags won two games against two Panama City Beach district opponents last week.

    Early in the win the team picked up their second district win and their third overall win with a close 59-56 win over Panama City Bay. Down 46-43 entering the fourth quarter, the team outscored Bay 16-10 in the final quarter for the key district win.

    Jasmine Grice and Chalandra Brown led the way offensively, with Grice finishing with 23 and Brown 16 points.
