  • East Gadsden High’s...

    East Gadsden High School hosted a Martin Luther King Jr. Shootout game Saturday night at the Jaguar Gym.

    The selected opponent was Orlando’s Choice Academy, a charter school whose roster included several players over 6 feet, 5 inches tall.

    When the game was over, the shorter Jaguars had run to a 63-58 win.

  • West Gadsen take win over Libery...

    West Gadsden High School continue to play pressure defense basketball from start to finish and opponents are finding it hard not to fold under the constant push.

    The Panthers carried their pressure show to Bristol Friday night, and came away with a 61-43 win over District 3-A opponent Liberty County High.

    With John Battles and Jesse Winbush leading the way, the Panthers built a 33-21 halftime lead and zipped away to the finish.

    Battles finished the night with 25 points and Winbush collected 15. Battles hit four 3-point shots and Winbush got three.

  • Bobcats take thriller over...

    The Robert F. Munroe Bobcats took a 12-point lead into the last quarter of their game against Panama City Covenant last Friday. The home team had to rely on foul shots from John Hilton Revell and Miller Joyner to pull it out in the end.

    Revell tossed in four free-throws and Joyner two in the last minute-and-a-half of the game to keep the Bobcats up in the 60-58 victory.

  • East Gadsden’s Lady...

    The East Gadsden High School Lady Jaguars basketball team is destroying anyone in its path and last week it was two district opponents, Panama City Bay and Wakulla.

    First up was Bay. East Gadsden jumped out 26-13 at the end of the first quarter and led 42-17 at the half.

    The final score was a high scoring 75-50 contest.

    Jasmine Grice led in scoring with 24 points and Chalandrea Brown added 17 points. Grice hit three 3-pointers and T’Erica Frost dished out seven assists.

    East Gadsden moved to 14-3 on the season and 6-1 in district play.

  • Disabled hunters hit the woods,...

    Ten deer were harvested by 19 disabled hunters as Russell Smith and Mike Layard hosted the fifth annual Paul Faircloth Sr. Disabled Hunt Jan. 16-17. The hunt was held on family property, which was the original Amos Davis Plantation.

    The hunt is held in memory of Smith’s Uncle, Paul Faircloth Sr., a prominent Apopka nurseryman who was born in Gadsden County and had a big heart for others less fortunate than he.

  • Bobcats take district win over...

    The Robert F. Munroe boys basketball team took a 25-14 lead into halftime of their home game against Aucilla Friday night.

    They maintained that lead throughout the second half en route to a 47-33 District 3-A win.

    “We played a balanced game and got out with the win," head coach Kevin Smith said.

    Smith's team had three players in double figures, with Christian Granger leading the way with 19 points.

    John Hilton Revell popped in 11 and Tommy Murray scored 10.

    Rebound wise, Murray led the Bobcats with eight and Sam Young pulled off six.

  • Winbush, Battles lead WGHS to...

    Jesse Winbush and John Battles caused opponents to feel like they were seeing a pair of perpetual-in-motion blurs last week as the two guards led the West Gadsden High School Panthers to wins over Wewahitchka and North Florida Christian.

    The win over Wewahitchka came last Tuesday night and was a District 3-2A victory.

    Wewa led through out the game behind the scoring of guard Christian Owens, who finished the night with 26 points.

    Winbush and Battles however, led a 31-20 last quarter blitz that helped West Gadsden pull the game out.

  • EGHS girls win three

    In a week of mostly wins, the East Gadsden High School Lady Jaguars proved to be tops.

    The Lady Jags survived a furious Bainbridge rally to defeat the Georgia school 62-61. They then upended former coach, Chariya Davis Rickards’ team 76-50. They finished that up with a thumping of Panama City Arnold 70-31.

    In the Bainbridge battle, East Gadsden led by a comfortable 16 points with only two minutes to play when Bainbridge mounted a ferocious comeback. A full-court press led to five straight turnovers and a rally.

    East Gadsden hung on to win by one.

  • Lady Cats pick up win

    The Robert F. Munroe Lady Cats picked up an interstate win sandwiched by two disappointing district losses last week.

    The girls played FAMU last Tuesday tooth and nail until the Rattlerettes finally pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 55-41.

    Kirstin Allen scored 15 points and Anna Dooner added 12. The two hit five 3-pointers combined in the district contest. Freshman Beth Summerford led in rebounding with nine.

    The team enjoyed an easy win last Thursday over Grace Christian in Bainbridge. All seven Bobcat players scored in the 61-37 win.

  • Lady Jags get what they wanted...

    The East Gadsden High School girls basketball team asked Santa for a good holiday season and the big guy delivered.

    The Jaguars played regional finalist FAMU and state champs North Florida Christian last week and beat them both.

    First, the Jaguars took on NFC. The two teams battled to a 9-8 NFC lead at the end of the first quarter, but East Gadsden outscored the Eagles 15-8 in the second quarter to lead 23-17 at the half.
