  • Girls softball shows up strong

    In county softball action the East Gadsden High School softball team managed to get in a softball game before the rains arrived.  The Jaguars won their third game of the season with a tough 17-14 win over Jefferson County.  Alexia Charlton picked up the win from the mound and was two-for-five with a home run.  Jazz Francis also had two hits including a double and a triple in the win.

  • Home runs power Red Birds to win

    Ben Young blasted a pair of home runs and added a double, helping the Chattahoochee Red Birds to a season-opening 17-10 win over the Liberty County Diamond Dawgs Sunday in Bristol.

    It was the first day of the new Big Bend Adult Baseball season.

    Young hit a two-run shot in the first inning and added a three-run homer in the fifth. In all he drove in six runs.

    Alondrea Gunn also had three hits for Chattahoochee and Clay White was the winning pitcher in relief.

    Richie Smith slapped four hits for Liberty County and 'Boo' Morris poked two hits.

  • Troy earns spot on U.S. team

    Andre Demetrius Troy, grandson, of Barbara Rollinson of Quincy, has earned a spot on the US basketball team that will represent this country in the Italian International Cup in early August.

    Troy stood out in several basketball camps in the Raleigh, N.C. area and has played on city of Raleigh recreation teams.

    This past summer he was the third leading scorer on the United Celtics AAU travel team from Raleigh and he won the USBA National Tournament's 12 and under three-point shootout in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

  • In like a lion, out like a lamb...

    After three weeks of nearly ideal fishing weather, the past week was just the reverse. March "came in like a lion and went out like a lamb” with high winds and heavy rains (much needed I might add). The fishing on Lake Talquin came to a halt. There was not one single person I talked to who was brave enough to even try to fish after Tuesday of this past week.

  • Local fighters strut their stuff...

    Small town entertainment takes various forms from square dancing to community theater to car shows. Saturday night at Quincy's livestock pavilion, the entertainment was confined to a boxing ring.

    About 200 area spectators braved wind and rain to attend the Best of the Best IV, which was sponsored by USA Boxing, the Quincy Fighting Tigers Gym and Gadsden County Tourist Development.

  • EGHS cheer squad takes eighth...

    East Gadsden High School’s competitive cheerleading squad took eighth place in the FHSAA state competition March 14. The Jaguar team competed in the non-tumbling division. The 12-member co-ed squad entertained the judges and audience with a routine choreographed by D&D Choreography of Tallahassee. Angela G. Sapp and Cametra Bryant coach the team, including Ridrina Ford, Clarissa York, Shanqueria Wiggins, Briana Rollinson, Kamissica Huggins, Seleah Gainous, Kyrstn Murray, jamia’ McNealy, Shyndell Hall, Patrice Brown, Prenis Ashle and Heneziah Jackson.

  • EGHS drops district contests

    The East Gadsden baseball team lost district games to Rickards and Godby last Thursday and Friday and the team’s record fell to 8-5.

    Rickards defeated the Jaguars Thursday at Corry Field 12-8 after jumping off to a 7-0 lead after two innings.

    John Price, Montez Fryson, Cameron Jackson and Cedric Atkins each had two hits to help East Gadsden in their come back but the home team couldn't quite catch up.

    Bobby Britham was the winning pitcher for Rickards and Lamar Turner and Ryan Welke had a pair of hits each.

  • Jags compete in Panama City

    The East Gadsden track team competed in a meet at Godby last Tuesday, then ran in the North Florida Relays in Panama City Saturday.

    In girls action at Godby, Jasmine Allen was second the 400-meter, Sharla Chavers was fifth in the 400-meter, Torriah Bell was seventh in the 100-meter, Destiney Atkins was fourth in the distance medley, and Bell placed first in the triple jump, third in the high jump and third in the long jump.

    Allen, Mildreka Hobley, Chavers and Latonya Chandler won the 1,600-meter relay.

  • Munroe splits games in Altha

    The R. F. Munroe softball team gave it out and took it in a pair of games Saturday in Altha.

    The Bobcats hammered Malone in the first game and then got hammered by Arnold in the second contest.

    Munroe scored 15 first-inning runs and went on to defeat Malone 21-3 in their first game.

  • Big Bend kicks off league play

    The fledgling Big Bend Adult Baseball League will have is first taste of action this weekend in Chattahoochee in a preseason classic.

    There will be three games Saturday with the Jackson County A's taking on the Quincy All-Stars at 2 p.m. At 4:30 the Liberty County Dawgs will play the Calhoun Horsemen. At 7 p.m. the host team Chattahoochee Red Birds will play a yet-to-be-named opponent.

    Sunday's action will begin at 2 p.m.

    Admission is free for all games.
