  • Lifeguards, swimmers recognized...

    City of Quincy Parks and Recreation Department King Street  pool lifeguards ended the summer with a bang Aug. 15. Attendees enjoyed water games and lunch. A certificate and medal was presented to each swimmer for his or her performance in swim lessons. Submitted

    Registration for tackle football for Pee Wee (ages 8-10), Midget (ages 11-12) is being held as well. Cost is $35 for city residents, $40 for non-city.

  • Local student earns accolades...

    Emily Massey is a small girl. She stands 5', 1" tall and weighs 95 pounds. But her size is perfect for her position in the sport of rowing. She's a coxswain. The medals she has won in the sport hang heavy around her slender neck and indicate that she is good at her job.

    Massey, who graduated from Maclay School this year, has participated in rowing since the she was in sixth grade. In an area where football is king and basketball is queen, the sport of rowing attracts little attention.

  • EGHS football players attend...

    East Gadsden High School Jaguar football players Antwan Matthews and Wiley Williams recently attended the Nick Saban Crimson Tide Football Camp at the University of Alabama.  

    Williams, serving as a running back in his junior year, said, “The experience can only help me to improve, and I’m glad I had the chance to go.”  

    Matthews, also a junior last year, said, “They really put you to the test with some very intense training, and I accomplished a lot.”

  • Young signs to play for Georgia...

    Robert F. Munroe Day School utility player Sam Young signed a grant in aid this week to play baseball at Andrew College in Cuthbert, Ga. Young was a 4-year starter for the Bobcats and played all nine positions.  This season he batted .378 with 20 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .480.  Bobcat baseball coach, Mike Troelstrup, said Young was a valuable team leader, a talented utility player and possessed a tremendous work ethic.   • Salters hosting East Gadsden...

    East Gadsden High School head basketball coach Demetric Salters will host a basketball camp for youngsters ages 7-16 through July 8 at the East Gadsden gym.

    Camps will meet Monday through Thursday from 5:45 until 6:45 p.m.

    Fundamental skills, offensive and defensive situations and the importance of teamwork will be taught at the camp.

  • Dodgers game postponed, Red...

    The Quincy Dodgers baseball game in the Georgia/Florida/Alabama Baseball League was postponed Sunday due to illness. The Miccouskee team informed the Dodgers about an hour before the game that they would not be coming to Dodger Field.

    Quincy still leads the league with a 7-1 record. They will play Isuway this Sunday.

    The site of the game was not known at press time.

    In other play, things tightened up in the Big Bend Adult Baseball League of Florida Sunday.

  • Lightfoot’s slam leads...

    Darryl Lightfoot Jr. poked a grand slam home run in the bottom of the fourth inning as he and his Quincy Dodger teammates went on to defeat the San Antonio, Texas Bears 17-3 in a baseball game played in Wacissa Sunday.

    Lightfoot’s blast broke up a 3-3 tie game and got the Dodgers on an offensive roll.

    Lightfoot finished with three hits in the contest and had six RBIs. Brian Elkins added two hits to the Quincy attack and drove in three runs.

  • EGHS falls to Walton in spring...

    “We played very well defensively, but really had no consistency on offense,” East Gadsden head football coach Scott Anderson said following his teams 6-0 loss to Walton County High School in a Thursday night spring football game. “The defense held up all night long. Offensively we missed open passes and our running game lacked consistency.”

    The game was played under threatening skies all evening but the rain held off until the game’s completion.

  • Fumbles hurt WGHS in lost to...

    Five lost fumbles hurt the West Gadsden offensive effort in the Panthers’ 13-0 loss to Florida High in a spring football game in Tallahassee Friday night.

    The Seminoles’ Jack Metz returned one of those fumbles for a touchdown. Florida High also scored points on 32- and 39-yard field goals by Chase Varnadore.

    West Gadsden’s Shermonta Hollins appeared to have scored a touchdown in the third quarter but it was called back because of a penalty.
