  • Girls hoops teams win some, lose...

    “Sometimes you win some, sometimes you lose some” must have been the motto for all three county girls hoops teams last week as each suffered defeat but managed to pull it together to win another day.

    The Robert F. Munroe Lady Cats lost a blowout, played a close one and then blew out another in a complex week of basketball.

  • Jags trample local competition

    The East Gadsden High School Jaguars’ season opener was played Dec. 1 against Jefferson County. The Jags came out on top of the Tigers, 84-58.

    Game leaders were Jessie Ray with 12 points and two steals, Andre Robinson had eight points, 13 rebounds and two blocked shots. John Battles added eight points, six assists and four steals, while Desmond Gibson pitched in eight points, five rebounds and three assists.

  • West Gadsden High undefeated in...

    Basketball season is now in full swing across Gadsden county and West Gadsden High School is 3-0 under new head coach Gene Granger.

    Granger is a 1999 graduate of Florida High in Tallahassee and had a great career scoring over 1,200 points as a shooting guard and leading the 'Noles to two Final Four appearances. He went on to play one year at Tallahassee Community College before taking his talents to Charleston Southern University where he was the Buccaneers’ team captain as a junior and senior.

  • West Gadsden ladies pick up win

    In county basketball action last week, West Gadsden High School was the only team to pick up a win and the Panthers picked up two to move to 3-5 on the season. 

    East Gadsden High and Robert F. Munroe Day School each lost two games. This week marks the last week of games until after Christmas break for all three teams with the exception of East Gadsden, which hosts basketball power Ribault Dec. 22.

  • Salters says expectations are...

    Bo may know football and Bo may know baseball, but Dimitric Salters knows basketball. The "Bo" referred to of course is Bo Jackson, the multi-sport Heisman trophy winning athlete who played professional baseball and football. Bo may have been a pro at what he did, but you would have to look long and hard to find more of a pro than East Gadsden High School’s head basketball coach Dimitric Salters.

  • Girls hoops action sees wins,...

    The East Gadsden High School girls basketball team scored 31 first half points en route to a 46-31 district defeat of Madison County. 

    LaBrittany McDonald led the Jaguars in scoring with 14 points.  T’Erica Frost and Ashley Blair each added 10 points. The team played in the Florida Georgia Shootout over the weekend and lost to Thomasville High School 69-35.

    The Robert F. Munroe Lady Cats dropped their third game of the season to Grace Christian despite leading 17-13 after the first quarter.

  • Area prep girls teams open hoops...

    All three county girls teams lost their season openers this past week in the first week of FHSAA basketball. 

    The Robert F. Munroe Lady Cats opened their season first with a 45-37 loss to Maclay.  An anemic fourth quarter turned a 34-33 lead into an 8-point loss. 

    The score was knotted a 18 at the half.

    Sophomore Beth Summerford led her team with 13 points and point guard Kristen Allen was one assist from a triple double.  Allen had 12 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. 

    Summerford added nine rebounds.

  • Bobcats end season with loss...

    The Bobcats of Robert F. Munroe Day School saw their season come to a close against the Eagles of Oak Hall in Gainesville by the score of 47-15. Fittingly, the game was played on Friday the 13th, with the Bobcats suffering several miscues against a 2-7 Eagle team that seemed to find the stride it had been looking for all season.

  • Panthers end season 0-10

    West Gadsden wrapped up the 2009 campaign last Friday night on the road against the Florida High Seminoles. The Panthers were looking to get off the snide and finish the season with a win in Tallahassee.

    It started the Panthers way as quarterback Carlton McWhite hit receiver Larico Dickey for a 60-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to give them the early lead.

  • Lady Cats expected to start next...

    After showing significant improvement from the first time the Robert F. Munroe volleyball team played nemesis John Paul II Catholic High School during the regular season, the team hoped that after four previous losses that the fifth time would be the charm. After all, the fifth meeting of the season between the two Class A schools was close by in Tallahassee and the winner earned a trip to the Region 1 finals and a possible state tournament berth.
