  • Cavaliers come out on top

    Spearheaded by Roger Milton, Communities and Schools sponsored a youth basketball league at the city of Quincy Recreational Center. The Cavaliers were the league and tournament champions.  They were undefeated the entire season. Shown here are Marquel Smith, Jabari Richardson, Roderick Zanders, John Kelly, Quandarius Hill, Christopher Turner, Derenzo Payne, Justin Walker and Kyeria James.  The team was coached by Johnny and Ida Walker.   • 'Human Tornado' comes...

    Alpha UPKUDO Martial Arts and Fitness School, located  in Havana, hosted a seminar for world fighting champion  Grand Master Gary Lee Baker Feb. 6. Baker, a ninth-degree black belt, worked with more than 30 children, teens and adults to sharpen up their techniques, and give them inspiration and strategies on how they could one day become world champions. Baker founded the style of UPKUDO after years of competing in full contact, point and continuous fighting. He is fondly known as the "Human Tornado," due to his ability to do aerial techniques and explosive speed.

  • Robinson to play at FIU

    East Gadsden High School senior Bryan Robinson signed his letter of intent Feb. 3 to play football for Florida International University in Miami. If he does well, Robinson may have the opportunity to play basketball for the university as well. Robinson played defensive lineman for the Jaguars, and was a part of the track and basketball teams as well.

  • Mathews to play at JU

    Antwain Mathews, also a senior at EGHS, signed his letter and will be playing for Jacksonville University in Jacksonville. A defensive back and receiver, Mathews said he plans to major in business management and hopes to play professional football someday. Mathews was selected for the All Big Bend Team by the Tallahassee Democrat.

  • Holmes headed to Oklahoma

    Derrick Holmes signed his letter of intent Feb. 3 to play football at Langston University in Langston, Okla. The Carter-Parramore Academy senior thanked his mentors and family for their support and for believing in him.

  • Munroe closes season with win,...

    The last week of regular season for girls basketball ended on a positive note for only one county team. 

    After losing to Maclay in a close one earlier in the week, Robert F. Munroe Day School’s Lady Bobcats defeated Poplar Springs for the second time to close out their season.  East Gadsden High School defeated West Gadsden High mid-week but then lost to a Port St. Joe team that won 19 games this season.  West Gadsden dropped its last two final games to Aucilla Christian and East Gadsden, thus wrapping up the 2009-10 regular season of girls basketball.

  • TCS Lions to host big matchup...

    Tallavana Christian School will host Emmanel Christian, East Division Conference champions Friday night.

    The varsity and junior varsity teams at TCS each have 15-2 records. The TCS  varsity Lions lost to Emmanuel earlier this year by 5 points.

    The JV team will plan at 4:30 p.m., followed by the Lady Lions at 5:45, and the varsity boys at 7:20.

    This will be the last home game of the season for the Lions, who will take on Panama City Feb. 9 at 5:30 p.m.

  • Tourney brings fisherman to area...

    Seven inches of rain two days before the 10th annual Crappie USA Tournament at Lake Talquin Jan. 23 led to fewer participants in tournament than in years past. In 2009, more than 50 boats entered the tournament, while only 28 entered this year.

    "It was a combination of the economy and bad weather. I entered this year but because the fishing is so poor, I didn't even bring my boat out," said Ed Allen, a Lake Talquin resident.

    A cold and misty morning gave way to a beautiful afternoon in time for the 3 p.m. weigh-in. More than $4,200 was the payout this year.

  • Munroe, WGHS take wins, EGHS...

    Gadsden County basketball teams continue to hover around average as West Gadsden High School won one, Robert F. Munroe Day School split and East Gadsden High dropped two tough district games.

    This week marks the last week of regular season girls basketball and district seedings are already set for the tournaments that tip off next week.

    The Munroe Lady Cats picked up one district win but lost the one they really needed last week.  The Lady Cats survived both a slow start and the loss of leading scorer, Beth Summerford, to defeate John Paul II 45-20.

  • Girls hoops teams back on track

    The county girls basketball teams were impressive this past week going 7-2 against some formidable opposition. 

    West Gadsden High School defeated North Florida Christian and Franklin County but lost to Port St. Joe.  East Gadsden High picked up three, including wins over Taylor and Madison counties and Gody.  Robert F. Munroe Day School defeated Liberty County and Poplar Springs but lost to Malone in a district contest.
