  • Panthers, Jaguars headed to playoffs

    The West Gadsden Panthers won their district last week, and as a result will be hosting Sneads High School on Feb. 21. The Panthers capped off their regular season by winning a thriller in overtime against rival East Gadsden.

  • Bobcats drop two games in preseason play

    Playing everyone on his R.F. Munroe Bobcats roster over the two-day preseason tournament at Florida High School, first-year Bobcat skipper Chris Warfel accomplished a lot in terms of developing a team identity and seeing attainable goals — though his team fell to Rickards 2-6 and host Florida High 9-19.

    On Saturday evening, fans of both the East Gadsden Jaguars and the West Gadsden Panthers assembled inside the James A. Shanks Middle School gymnasium to see this end-of-the-season rematch between the two cross-town rivals.

    This time around, the Panthers were the host but chose to play at Shanks to accommodate the large crowd. Both teams came out displaying a lot of energy and focus during warm-ups.

  • Batters up at RF Munroe baseball opening event

    The Robert F. Munroe Bobcat Baseball teams began their 2013 season with an opening day ceremony this past Saturday at Bradford May Field. Highlights included an introduction of the varsity and middle-school teams along with the coaching staff, skills competitions, and a varsity/alumni game that pitted this year’s Varsity Bobcats against several past players. Barbecue plates and other appetizing treats were served to the large crowd (estimated at more than 100) that came out to support this year’s team.

    On Saturday, the West Gadsden Panthers and the Rickards Raiders gave the crowd at Shanks Middle School gym an entertaining game. Rickards scored the first points of the game on a thunderous dunk with 7:56 remaining in the first quarter, and Brandon Shingles quickly responded for the home team by scoring a basket of his own. The score remained tied at two until a dunk by Marquis Brown put the Panthers up by two with 5:56 left in the first quarter.

  • Local girls gearing up for basketball tournaments

    Last week was the final regular season week for girls’ basketball teams in Florida to solidify offenses and nail down defenses before district tournament week begins this week.

    The Munroe Lady Cats played some of their best basketball of the season as they split two games in what could have been a two-win week.

  • East Gadsden girls surge ahead of Wakulla

    The Munroe girls broke even in district competition, while East Gadsden picked up a nice non-district win.

    Munroe defeated Tallavana Christian on Thursday night 54-33. Senior center, Audrey Thomas, a four-sport standout at Munroe, had a double-double including a season-high 23 points combined with 12 rebounds. Anna Jones added 12 points off of four three-pointers. Tallavana Christian’s Taniyah Lockwood also had four three-pointers and finished with 19 points.

    As the players of both teams ran onto the court to warm up, fans and spectators began to share their opinions and predictions on the outcome of the game.

  • Girls basketball season winding down

    Girls’ basketball in the state of Florida is hitting the home stretch as there is only a little more than a week remaining until district tournament time. This past week, the Munroe Lady Cats lost three games, while East Gadsden picked up a big win and Tallavana Christian lost one.

  • Holidays busy in girls basketball

    Although it was a two week holiday break, all good coaches know their teams must play some basketball over the holidays to stay in shape. Both Munroe and West Gadsden participated in the Holiday Classic at Rickards before Christmas and faced much larger schools. Munroe played only one game while West Gadsden played two.

    Munroe dropped their one game to Chiles 54-19. Kadejah Glynn scored seven points in the loss. West Gadsden lost to Lincoln 37-18. Danielle Parks also scored seven points for the Panthers.
