  • Businesswoman gives credit where due

    East Gadsden High School held its Senior Class Night May 20, themed "A Night with the Stars." It's a tradition that has come to be expected. The young ladies were beautiful in their extravagant gowns and the young gentlemen were handsome and ready to take on the world in their tuxedos. How lovely they all looked.

    The gymnasium was decorated by caring hands to fit the theme. The program noted that the decorations were done by Special Occasions by Robin; however, we offer a much-needed correction and recognition for those responsible for it.

    Sincerest thanks to everyone who helped me raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.  Together we raised over $1,800.  This was done through the contributions of friends and our fourth annual yard sale.

    Will somebody, anybody, education Gadsden County commission chairman Eugene Lamb as it relates to citizen input during the commission meetings? Lamb seems to think that a citizen giving his or her opinion about an issue must be in line with his thinking.

    The parents of the 2008-9 Metropolitan Christian Academy kindergarteners would like to recognize Mrs. Brent and Mrs. Wilson for their outstanding work in opening our children’s minds to new ideas, serving as excellent mentors, and helping to create exemplary citizens.  Their compassion and devotion to our children is priceless.  They have proven to be vital in helping our little ones to mature, to understand the world and to understand themselves.

    This is an open invitation to join in a class action lawsuit against the Gadsden County Board of Commissioners and Gadsden County Hospital Inc. On Aug. 26, 2008, you voted for and passed the half-cent sales tax to reopen Gadsden Community Hospital with 25 beds.

    Ramsey Summerford was one of over 5,000 child laborers that were photographed by social activist Lewis Hine from 1908 to 1917. Nearly all of the photos are posted on the Library of Congress Web site. Hine’s pioneering work in photojournalism was instrumental in helping to get state and federal child labor laws passed.

    I think they should look for another source like GA Supply. Even if there is a larger up front cost, in the long run it would be better. Maybe they could look at Tallahassee and see where they're getting their energy from and see if we can use it. I don't think raising the rate for the citizens is fair.

    As a resident of the city of Quincy and county of Gadsden, I oppose any form of increase in the city utilities usage. Many residents including myself are experiencing a dramatic increase in my public utility bill without an rate increase.

Thanks to everyone who donated, hauled, sorted and priced garage sale items in advance, and to everyone who organized, sold and bought items last weekend. Thanks for loaning us tables, trailers and even an RV.  And thanks for getting the word out to your friends and neighbors!

    Come on, Gadsden County commissioners. Really now, you could not find someone that was born and raised or moved here years ago and has made Gadsden County his or her permanent home worthy of being considered for the county manager's position?

    I am so sick of you all reaching beyond Gadsden County to seek talent instead of utilizing what we already have here in this county. A person who truly cares about the county and will be here until he or she dies.

    Waiting out the storms this weekend, I decided to start a planter of flowers for my office window.

    One thing about seeing something grow is you'll have to work all the aspects together to produce the blooms. The soil requires preparation and handling, and the plants need tending.

    How similar these basics are to the organizations that tend to growth in Gadsden County.

    Our chamber and its members tirelessly work the soil of Gadsden County and tends to all aspects of growth, in order to see us bloom.

  • Reader says phone call from GCSO...

    On the evening of March 6, I received a 911 telephone alert from the Gadsden County Sheriff's Office, which was to inform the citizenry that a dangerous felon had escaped from custody and was on the loose.

    Good stuff. Except...what good was this message?

    The message was totally inadequate, since it didn't name or adequately describe the escapee. All we were told was that he was black, had tattoos on his arms and that was it. Nada!

    We weren't given weight, height, color of eyes, type of haircut, etc.

    What is it about America? Why do corporations and government at all levels ride the backs of the taxpayer?

    As an example, Gadsden County charges a 1 percent surcharge in addition to the state’s 6 percent sales tax and then, on top of that, charges another half-cent sales tax for a grand total of 7.5 percent. How do local businesses collect a half-cent sales tax?

    Did you listen to how President Barack Obama said the word "ask" during his inauguration speech? He said "ask" not "ax." (An "ax" is a chopping or cutting tool. "Ask" means "to call on for an answer."

    If a person says "I am going to ax someone," it sounds like they are getting ready to attack somebody.

    Set aside politics for a minute and listen to how Obama speaks correctly.

    On this matter, I think we should emulate him.

    The article printed in last week’s edition of the Times is misleading. The bid that this board of county commissioners awarded to Childers (Construction) was not the No. 2 bid. It was the third bid and no other contractor bid but Childers because, in my opinion, the commissioners wanted to give the bid to Childers.

    This is not a hospital that is being built. It is a four-bed emergency room. It won’t have the services that the citizens thought they would get when they voted on the half-cent tax.
