Strip club ahead for Midway?

The road to a 10,000-square-foot adult entertainment center in Midway’s 10-90 Industrial Park will be easier to navigate now after the council voted to hear the first reading of an ordinance at the July regular meeting to allow the sale of alcohol.

 

Brian Boulware, a Tallahassee businessman, said his intent is to invest $400,000 into the venture that will be “nice and first-class.”

 

Getting grounded

Several hundred people attended Florida A&M University’s fourth annual Farm Fest 2013 at the Research and Extension Center and Farm, June 8, six miles north of Quincy on the Bainbridge Road.

 

County to get more medical offices

There may soon be specialist physicians coming to Gadsden County because the Gadsden County Board of County Commissioners, during their May 21 regular meeting, approved a $155,000 amendment. The money will be used to add 1,200 square feet for physicians’ office space to the existing Gadsden Campus of Capital Regional Medical Center.

Gadsden drug dealer sentenced

Teriel Young, 32, of Quincy, was sentenced May 29 to serve 188 months in federal prison on multiple charges of distributing cocaine and crack cocaine. Young was also sentenced to six years of supervised release and $400 of special monetary assessments, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release.

 

Bypass work on track

Progress on the Quincy Bypass, which will connect State Road 12 to U.S. Highway 90 near Ralph Strong Road and the Capital Regional Medical Center Gadsden Campus, is about 30 percent complete and work on the project is moving at a steady pace, according to Anthony Manos, project engineer.

 

“Much of the clearing is done about a third of the drainage is complete and about 30 percent of the earthwork has been done,” Manos said.

 

Pomp, circumstance, pride

Even before 8 a.m., people started arriving on the East Gadsden High School campus. By 8:45 a.m., the gymnasium, the venue for graduation was full and people were directed to go to the overflow room in the cafeteria. That, too, was filling up quickly.

 

“Ladies and gentlemen, I would ask you to make alittle more room. We have people still standing outside waiting to come in; some have come quite a distance so please let’s try to accommodate,” said Gadsden County School Superintendent Reginald James.

Capt. Ridgeway Stone has served with the Quincy Police Department for 24 years. There was a celebration for his retirement on Thursday, May 30, at the Campbell-Kelly Center. His family and colleagues were in attendance as the ceremony was led by Chief Walt McNeil of the Quincy Police Department.

Schools fare well in FCAT math

The Florida Department of Education released the latest Florida Comprehensive Assessment Tests results May 24. Overall, students raised their scores on state writing tests. Most improvements were made among minorities and elementary school children, according to DOE.

 

According to the DOE, African-American students made some of the largest gains, improving their writing scores by 6 points overall. 

 

Thousands flock to Mega-Reunion

The parking lots at the former Havana Northside High School were filled to capacity and cars were parked in every possible space around the school for blocks. More than 2,000 people were sitting under tents and large umbrellas that ringed the old baseball diamond. There were more than 50 grills going and half as many fryers cooking up some of the best smelling and probably tastiest Southern food on the planet.
