Today's Opinions

  • It's why they do what they do

After working with and covering the Havana Relay for Life, I found myself wondering about the people who commit to working so hard on similar events. Beyond the obvious reasons, I wondered what makes people commit to such involvement.

Then I began to think about how we can be involved in making the world a better place on a daily basis. And that started me to thinking about random acts of kindness.

  • A little down-home humor to cure the pollenated blues

I have to admit, I got a little homesick last week. It was Masters week in Augusta, after all, and I was missing all that goes with it. I even missed the joy of yelling at out-of-towners who don’t know where to go and then turn around in all the wrong places.

I miss seeing the grounds, with all the azaleas and dogwoods, and the green, green, very green grass. Oh, you can see azaleas and dogwoods other places, but they’re just not the same as those at the Masters.

  • Sometimes you just gotta go and get it

When there is a story out there you have to go and get it in order to explain it to the reader.

Last week I was having lunch and Alex Boques, whom I've known for several years, came over to my table and said, that he would like to ask me something. He wanted to know if I knew how the city decides where to put stop signs. I know where Alex lives and I also knew that a stop sign had been placed there a few weeks ago.

  • Letters to the Editor: April 15 Edition

‘Free pass’ will not be tolerated

I find it hard to believe that anyone in the city of Gretna is considering voting to re-elect city Commissioner Willie Fagg. Have the good folks in Gretna forgotten that Fagg called them stupid, ignorant black people? If a white person would have called you stupid and ignorant, you would have been outraged.

  • If you send it, we will publish it

I had a visitor stop by to see me the other day. He was quite upset that the school his grandchildren attend “never makes the paper.”

He went on to tell me that there are very often photos from a handful of our schools, but not all schools are represented. He wanted to know why. I explained it to him, but I figure there are probably lots of other folks wondering the same thing.

  • Spring has sprung and I'm oh, so glad

Spring is my favorite season of the year. It's so beautiful. Between the blooming dogwood trees and the azalea bushes the ride through the the countryside is amazingly beautiful. Every year I take a Sunday afternoon off, get in my car, and ride.

My favorite place to ride is north on the Attapulgus Highway. I start at King Street and continue until I end up in Georgia. I don't know of another more scenic route in this area. Undoubtedly, there are other scenic roads and streets in our vicinity but I don't know about them.

  • Homemade dresses and boiled eggs...favorite Easter memories

One of my favorite childhood memories was Easter Sunday morning. I loved getting  up and finding that the Easter Bunny had come. My brothers and I always got baskets full of treats, including the typical chocolate bunny that you should always begin eating by biting off the ears.

  • I'm no April fool

I don't like practical jokes and I don't like nicknames. The latter, I'll deal with later but I suppose since today is officially April Fools' Day, some one will try to "get me" with a prank.

The day, since I can remember, caused me to be anxious all day and night. I can never relax on the day when pranksters, even the amateur ones, are allowed to run loose and do dumb things that are supposed to make you laugh but never do.
