  • A wunnerful Christmas, I ga-run-tee

A few years ago I was asked to read a story for a group of elementary school students, as part of a campaign to encourage them to read. It happened to be right before their Christmas holidays, so I read them the following. Hope you enjoy it and Merry Christmas!

Cajun ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas, an' all t'ru de house,

    Dey don't a t'ing pass, not even a mouse.

De chirren been nezzle good snug on de flo',

An' Mama pass de pepper t'ru de crack on de do'.

  • I've made my list and I've checked it twice

Here is my wish list for the season. I probably won't get all that I wish for. I never do but there have been many times that things have gone my way. So here is my Christmas wish list:

    • That each child who wants to succeed have a mentor who can help him or her reach that goal.

    • That battered and abused women will find the courage to say enough is enough and move beyond that relationship.

    • That elected officials will put the what's best for everyone above their selfish motives.

  • Resident invites locals to drive by and see the light(s)

As is our tradition, my family and I have built a Christmas light display for our friends and neighbors of all ages to enjoy.  I am sure it will bring a smile to the face of anyone who visits.

  • They're in a daze...because of lack of sleep...or it could be love

As Christmas day approaches, I find myself thinking back to some of my favorite holiday memories. And after my third piece of fruitcake, I feel brave enough to share them with you.

I remember the first Christmas our family had together after my mom and stepdad married. My dad (the step part had faded away by then) bought my mother a new camera, and carefully wrapped it, placed a bow on top and placed it under the Christmas tree.

  • It's not too late to send out some cards

I didn't send out very many Christmas cards this year and it's not because of the high price of postage or Christmas cards. I didn't have that many addresses. When I sat down to address cards, I only had about 20 addresses.

  • A wish list for Santa

I ran across this the other day, and I thought it was so appropriate...please...to enjoy.

    Wish List for Santa

In a world of greed and fear, Santa is unique.

Everyone likes Santa and thinks he’s pretty neat.

So why don’t we ask Santa for the things we really need,

Instead of more of the useless junk for which the children plead.

Why don’t we ask Santa and the reindeer and the sleigh,

To help us solve the problems which confront the world today?

  • It's good to see it's out with the old, in with the new

I don't know when they bought them but I'm glad they did. After decades, the city of Quincy has invested in new holiday lights. They look fabulous, too. Gone are the crusty and matted, once-green garlands that saw better days 10 years ago. Gone are the garish lights that were haphazardly thrown over the magnificent oaks on the courthouse lawn.

Granted, there was a mistake made when the holly trees were hacked last week but everyone involved is sorry. Jack McLean, city manager, immediately acknowledged the mistake and vowed to never let it happen again.

  • Former opponent asks for support of newly appointed judge

On Nov. 16 Kathy Garner took office as Gadsden County judge, having been appointed by the governor to replace the honorable Stewart Parsons, who is retiring.
