  • OUR VIEW: Old specter of racial discrimination haunts Gadsden County

It was a small rally, but the speakers made some pretty strong points.
After all, the crowd had come out to rally against "racial discrimination." Racial discrimination in Florida's only black majority county in 2011. Just the idea seems strangely out of date and out of touch with what we like to think of as modern America. Even the advance flyers for the event sounded like they could have been printed for the last century.
But now we have a high profile lawsuit, or several hanging on that very serious allegation.

  • High school students keep us busy

You can stay pretty busy keeping up with Gadsden County's high school students.

And we are proud to cover and promote the continuing achievements of our young adults in sports, academics and community involvement.

In the past two weeks, the Gadsden County Times has enjoyed the opportunity to put the spotlight on outstanding high school students from our area who have made their mark in different ways.

  • Contemplations

I am listing these "10 unpleasant facts," as they were called in the Oct. 25, 2010, issue of the Wall Street Journal because someone shared them with me and I want to share it with our readers. There is a lot of work to be done in the black community. These facts won't go away by wishing them away or pretending they're not true. Ask any teacher, social worker, judge or law enforcement officer in our county and find out for yourself. This is disturbing/

Reading a book about a place I am about to visit or spend some time has been one of my greatest thrills in life.† If its a good reading experience you become more excited and thrilled with the idea of finally arriving at your new destination, especially if its a long dreamed about vacation spot or a new home in more pleasant surroundings.

    Editor,

We may be a small town but we have Big Art and Big Music. I get excited about every opening at the Gadsden Art Center and every new musical at the Leaf Theatre.

The Music Man will open on Friday the 15th and I will be volunteering for the first time. I am giddy.
