  • Schrenker released from hospital, jailed in Escambia County

    Indiana businessman Marcus Schrenker was released Sunday from Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, and he will likely face charges in Tallahassee or Pensacola, said Assistant Chief Deputy Frank Chiumento of the U.S. Marshals Northern District of Florida.

    Schrenker, who was found on the night of Jan. 13 at a Chattahoochee KOA after an apparent suicide attempt, is wanted in Indiana in connection with a fraud investigation involving millions of dollars, Chiumento said.

  • Dooner crowned 'Miss Munroe'

    At half time of the varsity boys game against Covenant Christian School on Friday night, Anna Dooner was crowned “Miss Munroe.”

    Anna is the daughter of Michael and Jacqueline Dooner of Havana.

    The crowning came at the end of a week of activities to raise Bobcat spirit. “Farm Day,” “Bling-Bling” Day” and “Class Color Day” for Spirit Week gave students an opportunity to dress up as a group and show their Bobcat spirit. “Twin Day” on Wednesday had the campus seeing double.

  • East Gadsden High’s Jaguars knock off tall Orlando team

    East Gadsden High School hosted a Martin Luther King Jr. Shootout game Saturday night at the Jaguar Gym.

    The selected opponent was Orlando’s Choice Academy, a charter school whose roster included several players over 6 feet, 5 inches tall.

    When the game was over, the shorter Jaguars had run to a 63-58 win.

  • West Gadsen take win over Libery County, 61-43

    West Gadsden High School continue to play pressure defense basketball from start to finish and opponents are finding it hard not to fold under the constant push.

    The Panthers carried their pressure show to Bristol Friday night, and came away with a 61-43 win over District 3-A opponent Liberty County High.

    With John Battles and Jesse Winbush leading the way, the Panthers built a 33-21 halftime lead and zipped away to the finish.

    Battles finished the night with 25 points and Winbush collected 15. Battles hit four 3-point shots and Winbush got three.

  • Bobcats take thriller over Covenant

    The Robert F. Munroe Bobcats took a 12-point lead into the last quarter of their game against Panama City Covenant last Friday. The home team had to rely on foul shots from John Hilton Revell and Miller Joyner to pull it out in the end.

    Revell tossed in four free-throws and Joyner two in the last minute-and-a-half of the game to keep the Bobcats up in the 60-58 victory.

  • East Gadsden’s Lady Jaguars roll on

    The East Gadsden High School Lady Jaguars basketball team is destroying anyone in its path and last week it was two district opponents, Panama City Bay and Wakulla.

    First up was Bay. East Gadsden jumped out 26-13 at the end of the first quarter and led 42-17 at the half.

    The final score was a high scoring 75-50 contest.

    Jasmine Grice led in scoring with 24 points and Chalandrea Brown added 17 points. Grice hit three 3-pointers and T’Erica Frost dished out seven assists.

    East Gadsden moved to 14-3 on the season and 6-1 in district play.

  • Crossroads breaks ground on new facility

    A new chapter in the history of Crossroad Academy Charter School of Business was written when the school officially broke ground on a new school facility Dec. 19, 2008. Many dignitaries were in attendance to help celebrate the momentous occasion, including Jean Miller and Lacrest McCreary, Florida Department of Education; Gadsden County commissioners Brenda Holt and Edward Dixon, Inez Holt, CEDO Board of Directors chairperson; Sam Palmer, James Palmer, Rev. Jerome Showers, Jimmy Sailor, CEDO Board of Directors; Heath Annin and Paul Gleason, RAM Construction LLC.

  • Lewis, Allen to be married March 21

    Sally Canipe and Don Parramore, along with Margie and Jimmy Allen, are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their children, Susan Parramore Lewis and John Walter Allen.

    The wedding is planned for March 21 at the Quincy Garden Center.

    Teen Court will be held Jan. 27, Feb. 10 and 24, March 10 and 24, and April 7 and 21. The Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office Teen Court program offers youthful offenders an alternative to prosecution through the juvenile justice system.   • Chamber, FAMU announce classes for small business owners

    The Gadsden County Chamber of Commerce and Florida A&M University are pleased to announce a partnership to offer the Construction Management Development Program certification classes in conjunction with the Florida Department of Transportation. The classes, which will enable small businesses to competitively place bids for statewide contracts, will be offered in Quincy by the chamber, beginning Feb. 2.
