  • Trial to begin next week

    The first-degree murder trial of Hernandez L. Daniels, 39, gets underway in Gadsden County Circuit Court next week. Lopez and another man, Fernando Taylor, are accused of murdering Constance Dupont of Havana in 2006.

    Dupont was shot to death in her downtown Havana apartment after she was suspected of being a confidential informant. Daniels is currently serving a life sentence in federal prison on drug charges.

    It took more than two years to bring charges in the murder case against the two men.

  • Local docs still iffy on health care quality

    Gadsden County medical professionals met last week with members of the Gadsden Hospital Inc. board, the first time such a meeting has taken place in more than a year.

    Physicians attending the meeting expressed concern that the new facility, Gadsden Community Hospital, would be able to provide quality health care for their patients.

  • Havana council approves retirement village

    Havana Town Council members voted unanimously last week to move forward with the development of a more than 350- acre retirement village.

    The developer’s agreement meets Florida Department of Community Affairs requirements, and includes verbiage that the town of Havana will provide sewer and water services to the site.

    The agreement also guarantees adequate connections so as to cover the town’s extension during the first 10 years of the property’s operation.

    A few months ago a local mother of five got a letter in the mail announcing that she had been selected as a lottery winner. The check enclosed was for about $7,500.

  • County athletes named to All-Star teams

    Munroe edges Poplar Springs

    Tommy Murray hit a free throw with time expired to give the Robert F. Munroe Bobcats a 44-43 win over Popular Springs last Thursday. Murray's free throw ended a back-and-forth game and gave the Bobcats their seventh win of the year.

    Murray finished the night with 18 points. He also picked off 16 rebounds.

    Murray had another double-double Friday night with an 11-point, 13-rebound game at Rocky Bayou. Munroe lost that game 61-55.

  • County athletes named to All-Star teams

    Gary Brown from West Gadsden High School was named to the Class 1-A All-State first team last week. The 6-foot, 4-inch, 290-pound Brown was selected as a defensive lineman on the squad.

    Three members of the West Gadsden team made the second team. Antonio Bostick was selected at quarterback, while Anthony Hubert made it as a defensive lineman and Pablo Escobar was name to the team as a kicker.

    Lance Ray from East Gadsden High was selected to the Class 3-A second team at a wide receiver spot.

  • Area girls hoops teams gear up for district tournaments

    This week Florida girls basketball participates in the district tournament that either ends their seasons or kickstarts it into the state playoffs.

    Hopefully, last week was no indication for the West Gadsden Lady Panthers as to how they will perform in districts.  The Panthers dropped three last week.  

    The team lost to North Florida Christian 50-46. Keundria Wright scored 18 points and Bridae White pulled down a whopping 30 rebounds. Jasmine Charleston added 13 rebounds and LeKendra Crittenden chipped in 13 points.

    An FCAT pep rally will be held Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. at Mt. Hosea MB Church in the Robertsville Community in Quincy. After the opening ceremony, there will be a victory march to the park, where there will be entertainment, the East Gadsden High School Band, George W. Munroe JROTC and cheerleaders, St. John Elementary cheerleaders, free food and games. The event is sponsored by the Circle of Life Outreach, Florida KidCare, Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office, Gadsden County schools, Gadsden County Abstinence 2009 and Mt. Hosea.

  • New business in town enjoys tattoo trend, increase in business

    At tax time a lot of businesses see a marked increase in business. Big Bend Tattoo, on East Washington Street, is no exception.

    "Business has been really good," said Brandon Barkley, one of three tattoo artists who practice the art of tattooing at the Quincy shop. From butterflies to dragons, it's all a matter personal taste when it comes to what people want tattooed on their bodies.

    Tattooing is a method of decorating the skin by inserting colored inks under the surface. The skin is punctured with a sharp instrument, usually an electric needle.

  • Family pulls together to make tough economy work for them

    Tough economic times have caused a lot of people to tighten their belts, look for ways to save money or seek ways to make more money. When gas prices went sky high and real estate hit rock bottom, Gay Steffen, owner of Shopper Express and Printing in Quincy, looked inward.

    Steffen, a licensed real estate agent, said she saw trouble coming in the real estate market about three years ago. Her husband, Marvin Steffen, was operations manager at Quincy Farms for 28 years, was also seeing signs of a downturn in that business.
