  • Coalition seeks to raise the bar

    Something is stirring. The Gadsden County Coalition for Change believes that students need for us to substantially raise the bar for education. The coalition is the latest of several groups, besides our heroic teachers and school board, to recognize the critical need to get students, parents, grandparents and neighbors involved in this timely endeavor for the sake of our county and our country.

  • Businesswoman gives credit where due

    East Gadsden High School held its Senior Class Night May 20, themed "A Night with the Stars." It's a tradition that has come to be expected. The young ladies were beautiful in their extravagant gowns and the young gentlemen were handsome and ready to take on the world in their tuxedos. How lovely they all looked.

    The gymnasium was decorated by caring hands to fit the theme. The program noted that the decorations were done by Special Occasions by Robin; however, we offer a much-needed correction and recognition for those responsible for it.

  • Daycare closes its doors after many years of happy tots, hugs and laughter

    These last four weeks have not been easy for Teresa Ann Hall, owner of Land of the Little People Daycare on State Road 12. She has alternately cried, laughed, worried and hugged parents, kids and coworkers.

  • Lightfoot’s slam leads Dodgers past San Antonio team

    Darryl Lightfoot Jr. poked a grand slam home run in the bottom of the fourth inning as he and his Quincy Dodger teammates went on to defeat the San Antonio, Texas Bears 17-3 in a baseball game played in Wacissa Sunday.

    Lightfoot’s blast broke up a 3-3 tie game and got the Dodgers on an offensive roll.

    Lightfoot finished with three hits in the contest and had six RBIs. Brian Elkins added two hits to the Quincy attack and drove in three runs.

  • Church Briefs

    • First Baptist Church in Quincy holds Sunday School each week at 9:45 a.m., followed by worship at 10:55. Sunday evening worship begins at 6 p.m. Sunday morning worship services are broadcast on Sunday events at 6 p.m. on 93.3 FM.

    • Church services at Mt. Pilgrim Primitive Baptist Church are held the first, second and fourth Sundays at 11 a.m., and at 8 a.m. on the third Sunday of each month. Church school begins at 9:45 a.m. each Sunday morning.

  • Hopkins, Redding to marry July 18

    David Hopkins and the late Doris Wood Hopkins, along with Billy redding Jr. and Tracy Anthony of Albany, Ga., are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their children, Kiana Hopkins and Billy Redding III.

    The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Wood Sr., and Johnnie Mae Hawkins and the late John Hawkins, who raised her after the loss of her mother.

    The groom-elect is the grandson of Reba Thomas and Mr. and Mrs. Billy Redding Sr. of Quincy.

    The wedding is planned for July 18 in Tallahassee, with a reception to follow.

  • Coon, Hicks married May 15

    Deborah Coon and the late Clayton Coon of Chattahoochee, along with Lauriel Hicks of Chattahoochee and Thomas Hicks of DeFuniak Springs, are pleased to announce the marriage of their children, Quinton Dail Coon and Lauriel Alicia Hicks.

    The couple was married May 16 at The Pondhouse restaurant in Bainbridge, Ga.

  • Alfaro named Exceptional Young Artist by GAC

    The Gadsden Arts Center is pleased to honor Reyna Alfaro, a junior at East Gadsden High School, as the recipient of the Exceptional Young Artist Award.

    Alfaro is a dedicated artist who creates beautifully crafted, imaginative works of art, continuously works to improve, helps others and has a vision for her future.
