  • Gadsden hospital officials expect $600,000 loss per year

    "I can tell you where the problem is. It's always going to be money. Even with the new performance, we'll be losing over $600,000 a year," Gadsden Hospital Inc. Board of Directors Chairman Craig McMillan told Gadsden County commissioners Tuesday night during the commission’s regular meeting, speaking of the Gadsden Community Hospital and the ever-rising costs attached with opening it.

  • ‘Hard times’ leads local juveniles to burglarize

    They stole, they said, because "these are hard times."

    Two juveniles have been charged following a 1 a.m. burglary of Quincy Liquors on West Crawford Street in Quincy. Eric Herring, 16, and Rashad Baker, 18, were caught a few blocks from the store on G F & A Drive.

    According to a report released by the Quincy Police Department, Herring and Baker admitted to taking about $3,600 in cash, five packs of Newport Cigarettes, five single Swisher Sweet blunts, a picture of a black woman and a purple Crown Royal bag containing a pair of pliers.

    As an example, Gadsden County charges a 1 percent surcharge in addition to the state’s 6 percent sales tax and then, on top of that, charges another half-cent sales tax for a grand total of 7.5 percent. How do local businesses collect a half-cent sales tax?

  • Quincy man found not guilty in alleged rape case

    James E. Green of Quincy was found not guilty of sexual battery and kidnapping last Friday afternoon after a Leon County jury deliberated about an hour.

    The case involved a former female friend of Green’s.

    The victim claimed, in her trial testimony, that she and Green were only friends, and the incident that took place Dec. 6, 2006, was forced sex and kidnapping, and not consensual sex.

  • Havana Police Department Arrests

    • Laronta Mechanz Fields, 28, arrested Feb. 27 and charged with possession/sale/manufacture of controlled substance, flee/attempt to elude a police office, and resist/obstruct/oppose officer without violence.

    • Robert La Shun Chandler, 36, arrested Feb. 27 on three outstanding arrest warrants.

  • EGHS track season underway

    East Gadsden High School’s track team joined seven other schools in a meet at Lincoln High School March 3, and the team showed well.

    In girls competition, Mildreka Hobley finished second in the 100-meter, with a time of 12:83. Jasmine Allen was second in the 400-meter, with a 1:3 run. Sharyla Chavers had a third-place finish in the 400-meter, with a time 1:4.

    Also in girls competition, the 440 relay team of Hobley, Allen, Chavers and NiiAdurey Murray finished second.
