  • Community watch programs could have prevented burglaries

    Quincy Police Chief Ferman Richardson said last week a simple thing like a Neighborhood Crime Watch program could have prevented the recent burglary of two homes and the attempted burglary of another, The crimes, he said, occurred within minutes of each other.

    "The homeowner, on his way to work, saw someone who appeared to be trying to break into his neighbor's house but wasn't sure. Instead of calling us, he called an off-duty officer," Richardson said.

  • Jaguars split in baseball play

    East Gadsden High School hosted a pair of Tallahassee baseball teams at Corry Field last Thursday and Friday, splitting the two contests.

    The Jaguars defeated FAMU High Thursday in a mercy rule game 14-4. Davorick Ford collected his fifth win of the year, hurling a two hitter and fanning five. John Price had three hits and Jaron Reynolds and Cedric Atkins two each to lead the offense.

    Maclay defeated East Gadsden Friday 13-10 in a walk-a-thon game.

  • East Gadsden relays at FAMU

    A contingent of East Gadsden track athletes participated in the prestigious FAMU relays last Saturday.

    In individual girl's events: Jasmine Allen was second in the high school 400-eter. Charyla Chavers was fourth and Shayla Gee 13th.

    In the 100-meter, Mildreka Hobley finished fifth. Latonya Chandler was fourth in the high jump and Torriah Bell finished third in the triple long jump and fourth in the long jump.

  • RFM Bobcats edge Sneads 10-8

    Baseball action turned out good for the R.F. Munroe baseball team as they edged Sneads Friday night.

    Cody Watson picked up his first win of the year in the contest. The senior right-hander went more than six innings and fanned five Pirates.

    Brock Hinson came in to retire the last Sneads batter and picked up his second save of the year.

    Sam Young led the Bobcat offense with three hits and Hinson and Clay Kramm had two hits each.

    The Bobcats’ record is 10-2. The team played at Altha Monday.

    Can we ask for more?

    Summer-like weather and excellent conditions, and a record number of RVs filled the local parks. Dallas Johnson, operator of Ingrams Marina, was out Saturday morning taking pictures of "the most folks we have had in 3 years." I talked with some folks from Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Arizona. Everyone was fishing, fellowshipping and cooking out. What a way to live.

  • Lady Cats move to 6-5 in season play

    The R.F. Munroe Lady Cats softball team lost one and won two last week to move their record to 6-5 on the season.

    First up was a disappointing loss to Leon High School 13-1.  The Lady Cats committed five untimely errors resulting in the 10-run rule loss.  Haleigh Corbally struck out three and also has a double at the plate.  Courtney Mayo added a hit and Courtney White the lone run batted in on a sacrifice.

    Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced March 9 that the United States Department of Agriculture has started to receive and distribute the first of $28 billion in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding.

  • Local leaders still await word on what funding county will receive from fed's stimulus package

    While county leadership awaits word on whether Gadsden County will receive any federal stimulus package funding and, if so, how much, governors throughout the country have expressed optimism that the package President Barack Obama has signed will provide some much-needed relief for states.

    State leaders are saying that the money will prevent further budget cuts and unemployment rate increases.

  • Mom seeks to help local family after loss of son

    A local mom is following her heart when it comes to helping the family of her son’s deceased best friend.

    Allison Sanchez said her son, Jorge, is having difficulty dealing with the death of his best friend, Christopher Grande, who died Feb. 1 after a bout with cryptococcal meningitis. A student at West Gadsden High School, Grande had been sick for some time, but was expected to get better. His mother had even met with Sylvia Jackson, WGHS principal, to set up a home study program so that Grande could keep up with his school work while he recovered.

  • Former Gadsden undersheriff appointed in Okaloosa County

    Former undersheriff of Gadsden County and former Quincy Police Chief Ed Spooner was named interim sheriff of Okaloosa County Friday morning by Gov. Charlie Crist.

    Spooner's appointment came after Charles Morris, sheriff of Okaloosa County, was arrested in Las Vegas on federal theft, fraud, money laundering and conspiracy charges. The 58-year-old Spooner was to begin work in Okaloosa County immediately.
