    On Saturday evening, fans of both the East Gadsden Jaguars and the West Gadsden Panthers assembled inside the James A. Shanks Middle School gymnasium to see this end-of-the-season rematch between the two cross-town rivals.

    This time around, the Panthers were the host but chose to play at Shanks to accommodate the large crowd. Both teams came out displaying a lot of energy and focus during warm-ups.

  • Batters up at RF Munroe baseball opening event

    The Robert F. Munroe Bobcat Baseball teams began their 2013 season with an opening day ceremony this past Saturday at Bradford May Field. Highlights included an introduction of the varsity and middle-school teams along with the coaching staff, skills competitions, and a varsity/alumni game that pitted this year’s Varsity Bobcats against several past players. Barbecue plates and other appetizing treats were served to the large crowd (estimated at more than 100) that came out to support this year’s team.

  • Fired city manager demands money

    Former Midway City Manager Auburn Ford, Jr. said all he wants from Midway is his money, and he will happily go on his way. Ford, who was terminated during the regular month meeting of the Town Council on Jan 3, is asking for compensation because, he asserts, the council had no cause to dismiss him.

  • Man gets prison time for 2010 killing

    A 41-year-old man accused of shooting and killing an Attapulgus, Ga., man in 2010 will spend time in prison.

    Earl Brundidge Jr. was sentenced Jan. 23 to 30 years in the Department of Corrections with a minimum mandatory sentence of 25 years and 20 years in DOC with a minimum mandatory sentence of 20 years after he entered a guilty plea of one count of second-degree murder and one county of aggravated assault with a firearm.

    He was ordered to pay $895 in fines and assessments and given credit for 999 days served.

  • Quincy shuttle funding in question

    Whether or not the city of Quincy will provide more funding for Big Bend Transit Shuttle Service will have to wait until the February meeting of the Transportation for the Disadvantaged Board has concluded.

    Commissioners tabled funding a request from the company until the city’s representative to the Board brings back answers to the continuing requests for more funding from the company.

    On Saturday, the West Gadsden Panthers and the Rickards Raiders gave the crowd at Shanks Middle School gym an entertaining game. Rickards scored the first points of the game on a thunderous dunk with 7:56 remaining in the first quarter, and Brandon Shingles quickly responded for the home team by scoring a basket of his own. The score remained tied at two until a dunk by Marquis Brown put the Panthers up by two with 5:56 left in the first quarter.

  • Reflections on Scorpions’ Season

    This past Thursday, the Crossroads Academy Boys and Girls basketball teams finished their seasons by playing their homecoming games against Washington Middle.

    The boys won their game by a score of 53-46, and the girls lost a close one by a score of 34-30. Both games were very competitive and physical.

  • Local girls gearing up for basketball tournaments

    Last week was the final regular season week for girls’ basketball teams in Florida to solidify offenses and nail down defenses before district tournament week begins this week.

    The Munroe Lady Cats played some of their best basketball of the season as they split two games in what could have been a two-win week.
