  • Havana goes for simulated gaming

    Ordinance No. 355, regulating the use and operation of simulated gaming, was passed by the Havana Town Council at their regular monthly meeting Tuesday morning.

    The council also approved Jan. 21 as a day for the celebration of the birth of Martin Luther King Jr. A parade will start at 10 a.m. in town. A local police escort will be provided.

  • Gadsden commission to refinance bond

    The Board of County Commissioners, during the regular Dec. 18 meeting, authorized the staff to move forward with refinancing the county’s $10 million Sales Tax Revenue Refunding Bond, series 2010 (Gadsden Memorial Hospital Project).

  • Big grad rate gains for East Gadsden

    There are numbers stories — and there are numbers stories to get excited about.

    East Gadsden High School’s graduation rate for the 2011-12 school year soared compared to the prior school year, jumping from 65.61 percent to 81.42 percent.

    Gadsden School District’s federal graduation rate also climbed 6.3 percentage points, from 55.1 percent in 2010-11 to 61.4 percent for 2011-12.

    As both teams prepared to run onto the court to warm-up, the home team band began to play and the crowd began to bounce. The excitement of this rivalry game could be felt in the air.

    The visiting Panthers didn’t seem to feel bothered by the atmosphere. The players displayed a lot of energy as they ran through drills and loosened up for the game. The pre-game warm-up time expired and the national anthem was played, which caused the crowd to stand and instantly fall silent.

  • Garner makes Gadsden judicial history

    Dec. 7 was a historic day in Gadsden County. On the second floor of the of the 100-year-old Gadsden County Courthouse, Kathy Garner was sworn in as the first elected African-American and first female as County Judge in the 2nd Judicial Circuit.

    Gov. Charlie Crist appointed Garner as county judge on the retirement of former County Judge Stewart Parsons three years and 11 days ago. Garner was appointment Nov. 16, 2009, and was overwhelmingly elected on Aug. 14, 2012, for a six-year term.

  • Robbery suspect convicted, sentenced

    A Gadsden County jury found Julius Hearns, 30, guilty of various counts of burglary and one count of attempted felony murder in the January 2011 burglary case of the Smith family off Flat Creek Road. Hearns’ accomplice, 19-year-old Shon Thomas Jr,. was found guilty on a lesser crime of burglary of a dwelling.

  • Suspect arrested after Quincy shooting

    A Quincy businessman, 29-year-oldTravis Barkley, is the alleged victim of a shooting Dec. 3 around 10:30 a.m., minutes after he opened for the day.

    Suspect Jerrell Quinshaun Richardson, 201 B.W. Roberts Street, Quincy, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and discharging a firearm in the city of Quincy.

    National Basketball Association Hall-of-Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson visited East Gadsden High School Nov. 30 to talk to students — not about athletics and sports, but about focus and education. Johnson’s visit was at the request of his business partner, Gadsden County resident Mike Fernandez and Andy Gay, EGHS assistant principal.
