  • History-making judge takes office

    An elated Barbara K. Hobbs became a Circuit Judge in the Second Judicial Circuit of Florida on Feb. 15 in a ceremony. Hundreds of people from throughout the 11 counties in the second judicial district attended the ceremony.

    Hobbs was elected to the court during the General Election on Nov. 6, 2012. Hobbs, a Tallahassee native, carried Gadsden County by an overwhelming margin over her opponent.

    A trial lawyer for more than 20 years, Hobbs said the ceremony was quite overwhelming.

  • Gadsden jury exonerates corrections officer

    A Gadsden County jury took about 30 minutes to return a verdict of not guilty Feb. 16 in the sexual misconduct trial of Corrections Officer Deric Mordica.

  • Midway gets nearly $300K

     For several years, members of the Midway City Council have dreamed of a center dedicated to the needs of its senior citizens. On Feb. 3, during an 11:30 a.m. ceremony the U.S. Department of Agriculture presented a check to the city for $289,400 for construction of a senior citizens center.

  • Sheriff reaches out on D.C. trip

    A trip to the national’s capital didn’t get Gadsden County Sheriff Morris A. Young an audience with President Barack Obama, but it did get him a meeting with Florida senators Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson, as well as a private audience with one of the president’s top staff members.

    “It was a successful trip. I was in Washington to attend the National Sheriff’s Association Annual meeting. My goal was to reach out to Florida lawmakers on a face-to-face basis,” he said of the five-day trip.

  • Arrests lead to drug charges

    A high-speed chase and a short foot-chase ended Feb. 8 with a wrecked vehicle and the driver arrested on drug charges on Ben Bostic Road just outside the Quincy city limits. Tony Lee Murphy, 36, was arrested on charges of fleeing and eluding police officers, possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, manufacture or deliver, reckless driving and driving with a suspended or revoked license.

  • Midway fire station nears completion

    Midway Interim City Manager Roosevelt Morris said that while the fire station on State Road 267 was unable to meet a projected completion date by Jan. 31, there is no doubt the new structure will be ready within the next 30 days.
    Former City Manager Auburn Ford Jr. told the Town Council during the regular monthly meeting Jan. 3 that the building would be complete by Jan. 31. However, later in the meeting after Ford made that promise, he was fired by the council and there was speculation whether the facility could be ready by that date.

  • Havana to improve wireless signal

    The Havana Town Council approved a motion that would authorize the town to enter into an alliance with the Florida Rural Broadband Alliance (FRBA).

    Jim Brook, executive director of the Northwest Florida Development Business Council and member of the FRBA, addressed the council and presented the plan and took questions from council members.

    The Gadsden County Drug Task Force executed three search warrants on the morning of Feb. 1 and by noon, three people had been arrested on various drug charges.

  • Fired city manager demands money

    Former Midway City Manager Auburn Ford, Jr. said all he wants from Midway is his money, and he will happily go on his way. Ford, who was terminated during the regular month meeting of the Town Council on Jan 3, is asking for compensation because, he asserts, the council had no cause to dismiss him.
