  • County considers dipping into endowment to furnish hospital

    Eugene Lamb, chairman of the Gadsden County Board of Commissioners, is optimistic that the Legislature will grant an extension to complete hospital renovations.

    "The House subcommittee passed on the extension two weeks ago and last week the Senate passed it. It looks like we'll be getting that extension for 12 months," Lamb said during a regular board meeting last Tuesday night.

  • County commissioners hire Tallahassee law firm

    The Tallahassee law firm of Ausley & McMullen has been selected to provide legal services to the Gadsden County Board of Commissioners. During the regular meeting Tuesday night, the firm was selected from the list of nine that submitted proposals.

    Commissioner Doug Croley sat on the selection committee and made the motion to hire the firm. He was supported by commissioners Eugene Lamb and Gene Morgan.

    He also recommended that Randy Hanna, an attorney and Gadsden County native, negotiate the terms of the agreement with Ausley & McMullen.

  • Without funding, renovations at courthouse will cease

    Gadsden County’s Capital Improvement Plan, which is a comprehensive plan for growth, includes many things the county wishes to obtain funding for. And completion of renovations of the courthouse is on that list.

    “The Capital Improvement Plan is a part of our budget that is dedicated to the renovation and construction of buildings and the purchase of equipment,” said Bud Parmer, interim county manager.

    Funding would allow for space and aesthetic beauty to be restored to the main building, as well as telephone line connections in the courthouse annex.

  • New yoga studio to open in Quincy April 20

    The Gadsden County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the opening of Yoga Dog Studio at 103 East Jefferson St. in Quincy.

    Yoga Dog will host a grand opening party April 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. to encourage the public to visit the studio, learn about the therapeutic benefits of yoga, pick up a schedule and meet some of the teachers.

  • EGHS on lock-down; rumor of unidentified person with gun threatens school

    UPDATE 3:20 P.M.:

    A 16-year-old East Gadsden High School student was arrested this morning and charged with possession of a firearm on a school campus and possession of a concealed weapon. The weapon was found in the student's backpack, but he had not taken it out.

    Forty-five students were sent home as a precaution.

    The student brought the weapon to school on the heels of a rumored possible fight that involved the student's cousin. By noon, all the students were back in class, but many parents did come and take their children home.

  • Quincy Relay for Life set to begin Friday night

    The East Gadsden Chapter of the American Cancer Society will sponsor the annual Relay For Life Friday and Saturday at the track field on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

    The event begins Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. with a reception for survivors and ends Saturday at noon with the presentation of awards.

    At 6 p.m. Friday night, the first lap for cancer survivors and caregivers will be led by the honorary chairperson, 17-year-old Amber Hill, a student at Tallahassee Community College.

  • County hires, loses new administrator

    UPDATED 4:45 p.m. MARCH 26

    Gadsden County Board of Commissioners Chairman Eugene Lamb said today that negotiations with Jeffery Naftal, who commissioners voted 3-2 March 24 to hire as county administrator, had fallen through.

    Naftal, former city manager for Juno Beach until 2008, was one of five candidates considered for the position out of 100 applicants.

  • Funds to operate Urgent Care scarce

    "You are basically out of money to run the Urgent Care (at Gadsden Community Hospital)," Gadsden County Clerk of Court Nicholas Thomas wrote in a memo to county commissioners last week.

    In the memo, Thomas said there is only $145,897 left in the fund that operates the facility, and that might not be a true picture of the financial outlook because of outstanding bills, including insurance, utilities and computer services. Once those are paid, the fund could be broke.
