  • State surgeon general declares public health emergency

    UPDATED MAY 4:

    Florida has five confirmed cases of swine flu, according to a press release received today from the Florida Department of Health. Two cases are confirmed in Lee County, one in Broward, one in Orange and one in Pinellas.

    The cases termed "probable" in Alachua, Lee, Indian River, Okeechobee and Clay counties, as well as two cases in Palm Beach and three in Miami-Dade, are still in the process of being confirmed.

  • Slow down or you'll pay

    "If people don't slow down, they are going to pay, really pay," said Officer Tara Bryant of the Quincy Police Department.

    Bryant said the new fines were the result of legislative initiatives that have trickled down to the county level.

    Here is the new fee schedule:

    • Move Over Act (failure to change move over when approaching an emergency vehicle) $116 or $146.

    • Moving Infraction/Child Restraint: $147

    • Non-moving (no seatbelt): $96

    Speeding Violations:

    • 1 to 9 miles over the limit: $112

  • Sheriff’s office pulls plant theft operation up by the roots

    A 24-year-old Gretna man, Torian Derell Daniels, has been arrested and charged with burglary and grand theft. Daniels was arrested without incident at a relative's home Wednesday afternoon in Gretna.

    "We had several complaints from Imperial Nurseries about missing plants and flowers. Our investigation led to Mr. Daniels," said Inv. Brian Faison of the Gadsden County Sheriff's Office.

  • Quincy mayor elected for second term

    Andy Gay said he was humbled by the confidence his fellow Quincy city commissioners placed in him by nominating and unanimously electing him mayor of Quincy for a second term. But, he announced before accepting the post, he had no intention of running for mayor again.

    "We faced difficult challenges last year. We started by firing a city manager and hiring a city manager. The city is healing its financial wounds and we're getting our energy provider (Progress Energy) paid on time," Gay said.

  • Midway elects new council member, retains one

    After the votes were counted in the Midway city elections last Tuesday, Charles "Chuck" Willis will retain his seat and David Lee Knight will be the city's newest council member.

    Willis defeated political newcomer Sammie "Sam" Stevens soundly with 63.64 percent of the vote to Stevens' 36.36 percent. With 407 votes cast, Willis got 259 to Stevens' 148. He will continue to represent District 4.

  • Quincy city commissioners give IT one more shot

    During a report on the status of Quincy's Information Technology Department Jack McLean, city manager, predicted that the enterprise section of the department would finish the year in the black while the government section would finish in the red.

    He said that in the next fiscal year, he's predicting the enterprise section will be able to completely take care of the losing government section.

    But McLeans's forecast wasn't what some commissioners wanted to hear.

  • Man charged with sexual assault on juvenile gets 30 years

    Christopher G. Martin, 46, was sentenced to 30 years in prison last week after he was found guilty on one count each of sexual assault on a juvenile and lewdness.

    Lt. Larry Gilyard of the Quincy Police Department, who made the initial arrest on June 16, 2008, called the sentence a victory for law enforcement.

    "We hope the days when these type of criminals getting off with 2 or 3 years are gone. The Quincy Police Department will not tolerate sexual abuse on our children. We're going to arrest them and make sure they are held accountable," he said.

  • Swine flu case numbers climb statewide

    The Florida Department of Health announced today that Okaloosa County now has a probable case of swine flu, and the cases in Miami-Dade now total four.

    According to the release, there are now 22 probable cases throughout the sate. Alachua, Flagler, Lee, Indian River, Okaloosa, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, Seminole and Clay counties all have one case each, while Broward County has three. Hillsborough County has six probable cases.

    Florida still has only two confirmed cases, two in Lee County. Broward, Orange and Pinellas each have one confirmed case.

  • Jail population drops for first time in nearly a year

    For the first time in almost a year, the inmate population at the Gadsden County Jail is less than 200.

    "Judge Kathleen Dekker has done a tremendous job. She wants to get our population down to 150," said Gadsden County Sheriff Morris Young.

  • No swine flu in Florida, but state warns residents to be cautious

    While no cases have been identified in Florida at this time, cases of swine flu have been confirmed in the U.S., according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There are an undetermined number of cases in Mexico reaching into the hundreds.
