  • His legacy lives on

    Alphonso Figgers spent most of his life fighting to abolish the death penalty in Florida.  
    Figgers, 65, who died at home on April 26, was laid to rest Saturday.  His funeral was Saturday at New Bethel A.M.E. in Quincy.
    Figgers was part of the Quincy Five, a group of young black men from Quincy who were charged and convicted in the 1970 murder of a Leon County sheriff’s
    deputy.

  • May Day merriment comes to Gretna

    The City of Gretna’s annual May Day Celebration on Friday, May 6 ,drew hundreds of people.  
    Children jumped in bounce houses and climbed up inflatable slides, giggling as they slid down.  The adults mingled,  laughing and talking as they stood around, or sat in chairs, while enjoying the live music.

  • You’re fired – please don’t quit

    At their May 4 meeting, Midway City Council Members votes were divided when it came to renewing the City Manager Auburn Ford’s contract.  
    Midway Mayor Wanda Range and Council Members Ronald Colston and Carolyn Francis voted to not renew the contract, while Charlie Smith and Sam Stevens voted in favor of renewing it.
    Colston recommended having a law enforcement officer retrieve the keys from Ford and shutting down city hall until they found someone to replace him.

  • Reginald James speaks to aspiring FAMU teachers

    Florida A&M University’s College of Education had its spring 2017 Apple Pinning Ceremony on Friday April 28.  
    Reginald James, Gadsden County’s former schools superintendent was the keynote speaker.
    James told the
    10 graduates who have just received their state teaching licenses that the induction was just a sign of achievement in their lives.
    “You’ve administered faith, demonstrated determination and demonstrated resilience,” James told
    the graduates.

  • Upgrades in store for Quincy park

    At their Monday, April 24 meeting, the Quincy Commission voted 5-0 to purchase two pavilions for Hillside Park, for $26,851.
    City Manager Mike Wade said Building and Planning Director Bernard Piawah collected two quotes from reputable companies.
    Piawah said the item had already been budgeted.
    Commissioner Keith Dowdell said there was $30,000 in the budget for the park.  He confirmed with Piawah that there will only be $3,000 left after the purchase.

  • A woman’s work ...

    Some things a person never forgets.  Dorothy “Dot” Ledbetter said she remembers the day the United States declared war on Japan.  
    “I remember the Great Depression.  I was little,” Ledbetter said.
    Now she’s 90.  Her birthday was April 27, and she celebrated while doing what she loves — working.
    Ledbetter said she first started working shortly after World War II began, when all the men and boys were drafted.
    She was raised in Tallassee, Ala., and went to work at a cotton mill in a nearby town.

  • Family members face murder charges in teen’s death

    Months after being accused of starving 17-year-old JaVontez Thomas, family members are now facing murder charges.
    A grand jury indicted Thomas’ mother, Sabrina Robinson; his sister Christina Harris; and his mother’s boyfriend, Michael Butler on April 19.  The charges were upgraded from manslaughter.
    The three were already facing charges for aggravated child abuse and neglect.

  • Talquin Electric rescinds boil water notice in Midway area

    The Precautionary Boil Water Notice issued April 27 for Talquin Electric Cooperative water members in the Gadsden Regional Water System in the Midway area-south of Dupont Road, East of Peters Road and West of Ochlockonee River, has been rescinded. The bacteriological survey showed the water is safe to drink.  There is no contamination in the system. Approximately 1,533 water services are affected by this notice.

  • The quest continues

    Thousands came out to support the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life Gadsden on Friday, April 21 in Quincy.
    Many survivors wore purple Relay for Life shirts and white and purple sashes.
    “I just want to thank God for being in the number one more time,” said Lizzie Mae Figgers, a 23-year cancer survivor.
    Figgers has been attending the event since it began.
    “I enjoy the walk, I enjoy the event, and I enjoy walking with my friend Pauline Hickman.

  • Lawson hosts town hall meeting in Quincy

    U.S. Rep. Al Lawson hosted a town hall meeting Wednesday, April 19 in Quincy.
    More than two-dozen people attended the meeting where he discussed a number of concerns raised by constituents.
    “We were fortunate to get Congressman Lawson as our congressman,” County Commissioner Brenda Holt said. “From Duval to Gadsden, we could’ve gotten anyone.”
    Lawson said he is very honored to have the opportunity to represent Gadsden County in Congress.  He said the past three months have been a fast-tracked learning experience.
