    The Greensboro Kiwanis Club is sponsoring a Spring Fling and benefit for the Hodge family April 10 at Greensboro Town Hall from 4-7 p.m. The event will include a car and motorcycle show. Call 663-9825 for entry details. The Singing Regals and Friends will present music. There will be family activities, door prizes and a drawing for a handcrafted quilt. Donations are $5 for one opportunity for the quilt drawing and $10 for three opportunities. Homemade cakes will be available at the cake auction. A pilau dinner will be served from 5-6:30 p.m. The dinners are $7 per plate.

  • Gadsden County Teacher of the Year: East Gadsden’s Austin taking each day, each student as they come

    Gadsden County School District Teacher of the Year Randall Austin firmly believes in his mantra: Every day, every child, every chance.

    And it’s that attitude that caused him to want to become a teacher in the first place.

    Now in his second year of teaching at East Gadsden High School, Austin is a graduate of Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Ga., where he earned a degree in economics. After college, he ran a hauling company and learned how to run a landfill.

  • Rookie Teacher of the Year: Just thinking about the impact she’s making brings this teacher to tears

    If you drop by the Stewart Street  Elementary classroom of Gadsden County’s Rookie Teacher of the Year, Nicole Dixon, you might find her students at the Smart Board teaching each other. You may find them eagerly raising their hands to answer a question from their teacher. You might even find them dancing.

    But what you’ll definitely find is a teacher who is passionate about helping her students become passionate about learning.

  • School-related Employee of the Year: With a little love, every child can learn

    Marilyn Basford, a paraprofessional at Gadsden Elementary Magnet School and the Gadsden County School-Related Employee of the Year, blushes a little when she’s congratulated for winning the honor. She’s quick to tell you...she just loves children.

    A native of Jacksonville, Basford moved to Chattahoochee in 1972. She worked at Chattahoochee Elementary for 19 years before coming to GEMS, and has worked with Gadsden County children for 27 years.

  • Cancer changes more than what it says on your medical chart

    Family has always been important to Shirley Vickers. But now that she’s had to face some of her worst fears, her family – and her life – have gained new meaning.

    Vickers went in for a regularly scheduled mammogram last October, and was called in for a second one. Then she received a call asking her to come in for a sonogram. The day after that, her doctor called again, asking her to come in to the office.

    Woodmen of the World will host its annual Easter egg hunt April 3 at 10 a.m. at the Woodman of the World Youth Camp near Hosford. Face painting, children’s ID cards and lunch will be provided. Drawings will be held for door prizes. There will be golden and silver prize eggs. Event is free and open to the public.

    The 2010 NFREC Beef Cattle/Forage Field Day will be held March 25 at the University of Florida’s North Florida Research and Education Center Beef Unit. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with the program beginning at 9 and lasting until 3 p.m. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. The field day will include presentations and demonstrations along with field tours of on-going research and demonstrations.
