  • Local student serves as messenger at Capitol

    Jerome Maples is a senior at West Gadsden High School. He’s the student school board member for the Gadsden County School District.

    And he’s gunning for your job, Gov. Crist.

    Earlier this month, Maples served as a messenger at the Capitol, working with Rep. Alan Williams. He was one of 12 students working there during what Maples called a very hectic week.

    “It was a great experience. It was a way to see the other side of politics and to see the Capitol, which is a very busy place,” he said.

  • Kottcamp pays visit to local schools, presents microscopes, dictionaries

    Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottcamp paid a visit to Chattahoochee Elementary School last Wednesday, and found himself a little caught off-guard.

    Kottcamp was on hand to present two microscopes to the school, along with dictionaries. After handing out the dictionaries, he sat down next to two little girls, and asked them what word they’d like to look up.

    “Specious,” was the reply. Kottcamp was visibly surprised, but encouraged the young ladies to look up the word and read him the meaning.

    The Greensboro Kiwanis Club is sponsoring a Spring Fling and benefit for the Hodge family April 10 at Greensboro Town Hall from 4-7 p.m. The event will include a car and motorcycle show. Call 663-9825 for entry details. The Singing Regals and Friends will present music. There will be family activities, door prizes and a drawing for a handcrafted quilt. Donations are $5 for one opportunity for the quilt drawing and $10 for three opportunities. Homemade cakes will be available at the cake auction. A pilau dinner will be served from 5-6:30 p.m. The dinners are $7 per plate.

  • Gadsden County Teacher of the Year: East Gadsden’s Austin taking each day, each student as they come

    Gadsden County School District Teacher of the Year Randall Austin firmly believes in his mantra: Every day, every child, every chance.

    And it’s that attitude that caused him to want to become a teacher in the first place.

    Now in his second year of teaching at East Gadsden High School, Austin is a graduate of Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Ga., where he earned a degree in economics. After college, he ran a hauling company and learned how to run a landfill.
