    Teen Court will be held March 3, 17 and 31, April 14 and 28, May 12 and 26, and June 9 and 23. The Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office Teen Court program offers youthful offenders an alternative to prosecution through the juvenile justice system. The program meets on the above dates from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Courthouse Annex. For more information, contact Tiffany Parsons-Braswell at 875-7596.

  • Daughter of former slave celebrates 100th birthday with family, friends gathered throughout lifetime

    Mersey Mae McGill made her way into the world Feb. 26, 1909. Family and friends say her eyes have been wide open ever since, and reflect her inner beauty, while her arms are always open to give and receive love.

    This past weekend, family and friends gathered to celebrate her 100th birthday and to make it special, they had to resort to planning the big event without her knowledge. With the help of family members, church members and others, over 125 people showed up at St. Paul AME Church in Midway for the celebration.

  • Church Briefs

    • Youth from First Presbyterian Church in Quincy will participate in a 30-hour fast Feb. 27-28 as part of an international youth movement to fight hunger. Prior to the fast, the youth have gathered pledges and hope to raise $3,000 to donate to the cause. After breakfast Friday morning, the group will fast until lunch on Saturday.     Dr. and Mrs. Taylor G. Fletcher and Dr. and Mrs. Moritz E. Dehler, together with Mary Dawn Davis and the late Ernest Matthew Davis, are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their children, Evelyn McRee Fletcher and Ernest Joseph Davis.

    The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hal D. Fletcher, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas L. Maxwell, all of Quincy. An Atlanta resident, she is a senor partner in the law firm of Hawkins and Parnell LLP.

  • Williams, Cooley married Nov. 16

    Wade and Dawn Williams, along with Mr. and Mrs. House of Niceville and Mr. and Mrs. Cooley of South Carolina, are pleased to announce the marriage of their children, Chelsey Renee Williams and Darrin Cooley.

    The bride is the granddaughter of Harold and Darlene Thrasher of Perry and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Graves Williams of Quincy.

    The couple was married Nov. 16, 2008 at the home of the bride's parents. Bridesmaids were Tracey and Cassi Smith, sisters of the bride. Best man was Sawyer House, brother of the groom.

  • Area schools prep students for upcoming FCAT

    Gadsden County teachers and students are working overtime to prepare for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, and the efforts are taking place in and out of the classroom.

    At St. John Elementary School, parents have been asked to make sure their children attend school regularly so that attendance is not a contributing factor to FCAT failure. Attendance awards are being presented in the intermediate grades to encourage the students.

  • Local hero makes headlines, leaves legacy

    The African-American fabric is woven with many threads. There is no one episode or event that defines the history of a people, but it is rather a mixture of all the parts that make up the whole.

    As the first man of color from Quincy to play professional football, Mack Lee Hill put the city's name in front of national television audiences on many Sunday afternoons. As a running back, Hill compiled an impressive record in the two years he played the sport before his life was cut short.
