    Quincy Main Street Music Festival is set for May 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. on the Courthouse Square. Admission is free, and the event will feature jazz and rhythm and blues music. Art exhibitions at the Gadsden Arts Center will also be on display from 6 to 9 p.m. Refreshments will be available on North Madison Street.

    • Church services at Mt. Pilgrim Primitive Baptist Church are held the first, second and fourth Sundays at 11 a.m., and at 8 a.m. on the third Sunday of each month. Church school begins at 9:45 a.m. each Sunday morning.

  • Quincyfest Blues and Barbecue set for May 1-2

    The planning committee is gearing up for the Quincyfest Blues and Barbecue, coming up May 1-2, according to chairman Cal Lutz. The committee has been meeting regularly to plan for the annual event, which draws thousands of visitors to downtown Quincy.

  • Beauty queen shares lessons from her own life with her peers

    In March, another one of 18-year-old Ashley Hall's dreams came true when she was crowned Miss North Florida 2010. It was the third pageant Ashley had entered in the past two years and the first that she’s won. Finally, she felt, her life was headed in the right direction.

    Pageant contestants are required to select a platform and the winner is required to promote that cause throughout her reign. Ashley chose juvenile delinquency prevention and it is a cause near and dear to her young heart.

  • Stone’s celebrates 50 years in the hardware biz

    On April 17, 1959, Jim Stone opened a little hardware business in Bainbridge, Ga. He sold nails, nuts, bolts and a few other items such as electrical and plumbing supplies. Fifty years later, the company has expanded to nine stores, with two in Florida.

    "We can build a house out of here now," said Daryl Summerford, who manages the Quincy store on West Jefferson Street.

  • Students become astronauts for a day at Gretna Elementary School

    Gadsden County Extension Office agents Yolanda Goode and Lester Muralles worked with an enrichment class at Gretna Elementary School last week, teaching the students about aerospace and rocketry science.

    The students learned about Newton’s Laws, and how to build a rocket to specifications. They also watched the movie, “October Sky,” and learned about the first walk on the moon in 1969.

  • Williams, Hover married April 17

    Ozzie Williams, along with L.G. and Cora Williams, John and Mary Ford, Lillian Hover and the late Robert Hover Sr., all of Quincy, are pleased to announce the marriage of their children, Angelia Regina Williams and Stephen VaShon Hover.

    The bride is a resident of Quincy and is employed by Centre Pointe Health and Rehabilitation of Tallahassee.

    The groom is also a resident of Quincy and is employed by SuperValue Distributors of Quincy.

    The private ceremony was held April 17 at the Gadsden County Courthouse. A reception will be held at a later date.

  • Community Calendar

    The Community Fiesta begins May 1 at 5 p.m. on Friday and will feature music and talent from around the world. Hispanic, Caribbean and southern traditional foods will be available.

    Quincyfest Blues and Barbecue will be held May 2 on the Courthouse Square in Quincy. Local musicians will take the stage at noon, and “Harmonica” Shaw will play at 2 p.m., Eddie Kirkman at 3 and “Biscuit” Miller at 4.

    Backyard Barbecue contests with over $6,000 in prizes will also take place.

    Food and drink vendors will be on site for the public as well.
