I rarely make New Year’s resolutions, and I’m not sure if this counts as one, but around the end of December I noticed that whenever I was in church my eyes would be drawn to the big steel crossbeam in my favorite window.
I’d look at it, unable to look away, and think about what it means, why the cross was necessary in human history and my part in it.
I’d think about sin, my sin, and I’d find myself praying, “God, show me my sin, that I might hate it as much as you do.”

Sometimes when we’ve had a good day at our house, as we crawl into bed I’ll say to my husband, “Nobody cried and nobody threw hard-boiled eggs.”
The “nobody cried” is self-explanatory. The “nobody threw hard-boiled eggs” refers to the time I became so frustrated and enraged that I took a plastic container filled with a dozen hard-boiled eggs that I had just finished peeling and threw them with all my might, one by one, on the entry floor.

I love a good conversion story, that moment or series of moments that lead up to a person going from not belonging to Jesus to belonging to him.
I remember telling my friend Mike that it was like getting married. Either you are or you aren’t. I told him you can think you’re married, say you’re married, live with another person as if you’re married, but unless you’ve signed the marriage license and said, “I do,” you’re not married.
