The Robert F. Munroe Day School volleyball team opened the 2009 season with two wins last week.

On Monday night the team traveled to Bainbridge to take on Grace Christian.  The Lady Cats won all three games and the match, with scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-16.

Munroe was led offensively by senior outside hitter Spenser Morris.  Morris finished the match with 10 kills.

Junior setter Kristen Allen had 15 assists as well as six kills of her own.  Allen added four digs and Audrey Thomas, in her first varsity match as a freshman, added five digs and two kills.

“I was impressed with the girls’ efforts during their first match, because it was the best they had looked up to that point,” said first-year coach Emily Kohler.

The Bobcats defeated Godby in four games on Thursday in their season home opener.  Morris and Courtney Mayo combined for 10 kills.  Allen added 15 assists and seven aces.  Morris, Allen and freshman Kaitlyn Sirmons were successful from the serving line as well, combining for 18 aces.

The team moved to 2-0 on the season. They traveled to Rickards on Wednesday and will host Community Christian today.

Kohler is looking forward to this week.

“We have the opportunity to improve our record to 3-0 this Wednesday if we come ready to play. Also, I am very excited about playing this next match in Tallahassee since it’s my home town,” said Kohler.

East and West Gadsden high schools open up their volleyball seasons this week.  East Gadsden hosted Florida High on Tuesday and then West Gadsden today.

Tallavana Christian (0-2)  has played two matches since their season opened Aug. 28.  They will play one more this week when they host Victory Christian of Sneads.
