Roy L. McLendon, Jr. was born May 9, 1926 in Midville, Georgia. When 3 months old his family moved to Quincy, Fl. Therefore, one may conclude that Roy is considered a native Floridan of which there are only a few left. He graduated from high school in May 1944 and immediately volunteered for the U.S. Navy. His boot training occurred at Camp Peary, Va. While there he developed a fever of 105 degrees placing him in the base hospital for five weeks. He actually went through two boot camp periods so he was well trained for the next assignment.
Off to Camp Bradford, VA for amphibious training at which time he witnessed his first snow. On December 12 he received orders to board the USS Ringness (APD-100) which was moored to the pier in Portsmouth, VA. The ship got underway December 19, 1944 sailing through the Panama Canal and up to the west coast. Then on to Pearl Harbor for a few days. Proceeding southerwesterly the Ringness developed trouble in one of its shafts. So back to Pearl for drydock repairs.
After the war, Roy attended college in his hometown of Tallahassee, Fl. He later began employment with the Department of Labor which continued for 38 years when he retired in April 1986 as Florida’s Administrator of Unemployment Compensation Operations. He continued working part time serving as an employer’s representative litigating appealed cases. During his retirement he served 9 years as a member of the Board of Directors of a local financial institution and continued to serve as the Coordinator of retired Department of Labor associates.
