The Robert F. Munroe Day School tennis team lost two last week but it wasn’t all frowns for the Lady Cats. The team came within one game of defeating long time district dominators, Maclay, at The Golf Club of Quincy. Maclay edged out a 4-3 team win but drove off with a new-found respect and even a little fear for the Lady Cats.
In the No. 1 slot, Hilary Flournoy lost 6-2, 6-2 and in the second slot Beth Summerford got a huge win over Maclay’s two, winning 6-4, 6-2. Lone senior Abigail Lewis won 6-4 in a long, exhausting tie-breaker.
Cameron McMullen dropped her match in the fourth position 6-2, 6-3 and Rachel Wilkerson triumphed in the final singles match 6-4, 6-2.
The Munroe team needed only one of two doubles matches for the huge district win but they did not get it. The team of Flournoy and Summerford split the first two sets with 6-2, 2-6 setting up a tiebreaker. Maclay stuck around long enough to eke out a nail biter in extra games 10-8. Lewis and Wilkerson lost 6-4, 6-4 to close out the match.
On Friday the team played and lost a makeup match at Chiles High School. Cameron McMullen won a close match 6-4 and the doubles team of Flournoy and Summerford won a big doubles match 8-4.
