The second season of softball began last week and while both East and West Gadsden high school teams exited early, Robert F. Munroe pulled off a stunning upset over Aucilla Christian to take home the Class A District 2 title.
East Gadsden lost to Taylor County 17-7 and West Gadsden was dropped by Wewahitchka 20-1.
On Tuesday in district semifinals, the second-seeded Munroe team disposed of Altha handily by a 20-1 score. Haleigh Corbally struck out nine and was 3-4 at the plate, including a three-run blast. Following in her footsteps was eighth grade first baseman Montana Manley, who also had three hits, including a towering home run shot to centerfield.
On Thursday the team took on six-time district champs Aucilla Christan and came out on top by a convincing 10-4 score. After a scoreless first two innings, Munroe got on the scoreboard with one run when Spenser Morris led off with a double and scored on a Kaitlyn Sirmons single. Aucilla retaliated with three runs in the bottom but then Munroe rallied with three runs in each of the next three innings.
For the second straight game, Manley and Corbally each blasted a three-run home run over the centerfield fence. Erin Sampson also hit a two-run scoring single to aid in the cause.
The Lady Cats outhit Aucilla 16-5. Having a multi-hit game were Georgia Davis (2 hits, double), Morris (3 hits, 2 doubles), Sampson (2 hits), Corbally (2 hits, HR, 3 RBIs) and Manley (3hits, 3 RBIs).
The Munroe team, who has not won a district title since 1999 when current Wakulla football coach, Scott Klees, was at the helm, celebrated at the bottom of the seventh when shortstop Mary Jane Milam fielded a grounder and threw it to Manley at first.
The team hosted Milton-Central High School on Tuesday in regional quarterfinals. Milton was the runner-up in District 1-A. Should the Munroe team win, they will play host on Friday night at 7 p.m. to the winner of Aucilla Christian and Paxton.
