Alternative Christmas Market opens in December

John Wesley United Methodist Church and Christ Presbyterian Church will both host an Alternative Christmas Market this December. The markets provide gift shopping opportunities that by-pass the usual profit seeking commercial establishments. The main mission of the market is to raise funds for numerous local and international non-profit organizations that serve the disadvantaged. Shoppers can visit interesting displays set up by the organizations and learn about the specific services and goods each one offers. The next step is to consider loved ones they want to honor during the holidays and make a donation to an organization that would especially please and honor each recipient. An attractive card is available with every donation to describe to the shopper’s gift recipient exactly how the donation made someone’s life easier. It might say, for example that the donation purchased a basic reader for an individual in the library’s Literacy Volunteers program or it might say a warm blanket was provided through United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) for a hurricane victim.

Tangible fair trade items can be purchased at each market and the total purchase amount benefits artisans in developing countries. Other gift items are available which directly benefit local non-profit organizations.

All donation and tangible gifts can be paid for with one check and the donation gifts are tax deductible. Optional cover charge is a non-perishable food item for a local food pantry.
