The Robert F. Munroe Bobcat Baseball teams will begin their 2014 season with an opening day ceremony Saturday, Feb. 2, at Bradford May Field. The activities will start at 2 p.m. and include team skills competitions, a Red and Gray inter-squad game, fan participation events and an alumni game. The RFM Baseball Boosters will also serve catfish dinners from 4 to 6 p.m. All proceeds will support the needs of Bobcat Baseball. One upcoming project will be the construction of a new covered batting and practice facility scheduled to be built in early February.
This year, the Bobcats will be led by first-year Head Coach Jayme Williams, who replaces Chris Warfel after just one season. Coach Williams is excited about the upcoming season and expects the 2014 version of the Bobcats to be much improved.
“I think we’ll be better than a year ago,” Williams recently told the Boosters about the team that was dominated by sophomores and freshmen during the 2013 season. “We should be pretty solid defensively. We’ll have to work to be better at the plate and on the mound, but a year’s growth by our roster will certainly help a great deal.”
The Bobcats will be led by seniors Myles Edwards and Steven Miller and returning juniors Bo Bailey, Will Harris, Bradley Klees, Casey Mathers, Sean Newton and Joey Sloan, who started or saw significant playing time last season. Joining the team this year are transfers Nolan Haire, Johnny Walkup and Jalyn Lewis. The Bobcats are also expected to field a JV team in addition to the usual varsity and middle-school teams.
“We hope to have a great crowd out for the opening day that will give our teams a great start for the upcoming season,” said Williams. “We should have all the basketball players out in the next week or so, and we’ll work hard to be ready for the first contest.”
The Bobcats’ final schedule hasn’t been released yet, but early indications are that there will be games with Maclay, Bonifay (Holmes County), Wakulla and Bainbridge (Ga.) in addition to district games with FAMU, Tallavana and Aucilla.
