A pilau dinner fundraiser is being held May 5 to benefit the Sherry Smith Fellowship, a fund that allows Gadsden County teachers the opportunity to travel all over the world to enhance their teaching experience.
Teachers can apply for the $3,000 fellowship, and the selected educator can travel to the country of his or her choice, then incorporate the experience into the classroom the following academic year. The recipient can also share the experience with students and teachers throughout the district.
Sherry Smith was a part of the Gadsden County School District from 1968-2000. She served as the district coordinator for the English for Speakers of Other Languages program, and had taught at Carter-Parramore in ESOL as well. Smith was able to travel to Mexico, and the trip made a huge impact on her teaching career.
In 1994, Smith was diagnosed with breast cancer, and had a recurrence in 1997. She retired from the school district in 2000, and died in May 2002. She was the daughter of Robert and Doris Chandler, who owned Chandler's Hamburgers in Quincy.
Smith grew up in a military family, and learned to love travel at a young age. When she died, the fellowship was established in her honor and took the direction it did because of her love of travel and education.
Past recipients and the locations to which they've traveled include Holle Boykin, Greece; Marurine Knight, China; Dawn Housser, Freedom Trail; Nichole Crane, Europe; Nanette Maranca, Spanish missions from Florida to California; and Peggy Simmons, Spain.
Tickets for the dinners are available from Jerry Smith (627-7890 or 694-4991), First Baptist Church in Quincy (627-9688), Byron Spires (Havana Herald), Sherry VanLandingham (Premier Bank) or at the Gadsden County School Board Office. Dinners can be picked up between 5 and 7 p.m. May 5 at First Baptist Church. Donations to the fund are also accepted at any time, and can be sent to the Gadsden County School Board, Attn: Cherith Sivyer, 35 Martin Luther King Blvd., Quincy, FL 32351 or Jerry Smith, 927 Bellamy Dr., Quincy, FL 32351. Make checks payable to the Sherry Smith Fellowship.
