My son Trey goes to Havana Elementary School and is in the second grade. This is the second year for him at this school. He has been picked on by other students. A few weeks ago, he came to me in tears saying the kids were calling him "Oscar."
Trey said his physical education teacher had been calling him this and the kids followed her lead.
I asked for a meeting with the teacher, Ms. Washington. My son and I met with the teacher and school administrators. When I asked the teacher why she called him that, she said he looks like him (Oscar is the father on the cartoon show, "The Proud Family"). My son said he thinks Oscar is crazy and stupid and has a long head. The teacher told my son she was sorry.
This teacher is an adult and should have known better. She should set an example for the children and not join in on the cruelty that is going on with my son. He has been through a lot and this is the last straw.
I tried to reach the superintendent and he has never called me back. It's not fair. I feel they are not taking me seriously and I'm very upset about that.
Thank God Trey has me to stick up for him. Some kids have parents that don't care or the kids have low self esteem. Some kids wind up hurting themselves over things like this. I feel Ms. Washington should have known better than to call a child by a cartoon character's name.
This has been going on since August and my son was too ashamed to tell me. Why would a teacher call my 7-year-old son by a grown man's name? If she thinks he looks like that character, she should have kept it to herself.
