The Munroe softball team lost for the fourth time this season to Aucilla Christian Academy, but it was this loss that stung the most. The Warriors won the 2A Region 1 semifinal game 10- 0 and ended the Lady Cats’ season.

The game was originally scheduled to be played the previous Tuesday but the weather kept the two teams rescheduling day after day. One plan was to meet in Gainesville Wednesday, April 30, and then Thursday, May 1, in order to keep the 2A state tournament on schedule, but the rains moved farther south, and those plans were scrapped. It was finally determined that they would wait until Saturday, when the sun was returning to the forecast, pushing the state playoff bracket back three days.

Aucilla jumped on the scoreboard early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The score remained 4-0 until the fourth inning when Aucilla sent another run across. Over the next four innings, the Warriors scored another five runs and ended the game in six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Anna Jones earned Munroe’s only hit of the day. There were four walks and 12 strikeouts. Maddey Pappadakis stole one base. Jeri Sloan struck out five and walked one.

Coach Mark Allen said after the loss, “We lost to a very good softball team that should make it to the Final Four. We can’t hang our heads over this one. It was a good season and we return all our players for next season.”

The Munroe team finished the season 12-11. The team had no seniors and will return the entire team. They were coached by Mark Allen and Dennis Cato.
