With all other county teams ousted from their district softball tournaments, Munroe was thrust into the district championship game against Aucilla thanks to a last-minute forfeit by FAMU-DRS an hour before first pitch. FAMU forfeited out of the bracket while Munroe was warming up April 16 at Aucilla’s field, sending the Bobcats into the district finals April 17 against No. 1-seeded Aucilla.

The Munroe team faced Aucilla for the third time this season with both previous contests going only five innings and victim of the mercy rule. But if you know 2A-District 1 softball, you know to never count out Munroe (11-10) in the playoffs, and the Bobcats gave all appearances this season would be no different. In contrast to previous games this season, Munroe held the Warriors scoreless for five at bats, thanks to terrific pitching by sophomore Jeri Sloan and fine defensive plays by the senior-less Bobcat team.

But Aucilla struck for five runs in the fifth inning, courtesy of two straight bunts and two timely hits to the gaps in the outfield.

Munroe was unable to push any runs across and was held scoreless, losing the title game 5-0.

Both teams had three hits each. Munroe got all three of their hits from one batter — Mary Pat Thomas.

The loss puts the Cats on the road this week. They were scheduled to travel to Jacksonville on Wednesday, April 23, to face the 2A District 2 winner First Coast Christian of Jacksonville.

The winner will face the winner of the Aucilla vs. Cedar Creek Christian on Tuesday, April 29.
