After four consecutive wins to turn around their season, the Munroe Bobcats ran into a powerful Branford Buccaneer squad in the postseason Big Ten Bowl.
The result was a 52-12 defeat by Buccaneers on their home field on Thursday Nov. 18, where a faux pirate ship fires a cannon every time the local team scores.
It looked to be anyone's game until late in the second quarter with the score 24-6 in Branford's favor. Then the Buccaneers recovered a Bobcat fumble on the Branford 7-yard line and everything started going their way.
Branford scored a touchdown and then another with a two-point conversion. And as the first half was about to end, the Buccaneers recovered a fumble on the kickoff and took it in to close the half 45-6.
Each side picked up a score on the second half. High scoring contests were nothing new to either team. Just a few weeks earlier, the Bobcats had walloped John Paul II Catholic 56-6 on Senior Night at Corry Field and that same night the Buccaneers had beaten Bronson 59-16.
Their postseason effort earned the Bobcats T-shirts and the Big Ten Bowl Runner-Up trophy.
A small crowd of Munroe fans and the cheerleaders had made the long drive down to Branford, sat on the concrete bleachers and cheered the Bobcats on through one of the coldest games of the year.
