Michael D. Jernigan Gallery Talk
Sculptor Michael D. Jernigan will be giving an Artist Gallery Talk at the Gadsden Arts Center on Thursday, December 13th at 2:00 PM.. Jernigan will be discussing his latest project "Honoring the Troops, A Sculptor's Perspective". He has been sculpting for 23 years and started "Honoring the Troops", a series of portrait sculptures, to honor service men and women. Currently two of Jernigan's portrait sculptures of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Terri Skene and Captain Fitzgerald are originally from Tallahassee and Quincy, respectively.
In 2008, Jernigan spent 28 days in Iraq and 24 days in Afghanistan as an embedded freelance journalist for the Tallahassee Democrat. During this time he photographed and measured military personnel for the project that will eventually result in twenty-one bronze portrait sculptures. Jernigan, a veteran himself from the Vietnam war says, "Honoring our veterans is a gift and a responsibility that we should take seriously."
The portrait sculptures of Staff Sergeant Skene and Captain Fitzgerald will be on display at the Gadsden Arts Center until January 26, 2013. More information on Jernigan's work can be found at honoringthetroops.com.
