As the No. 2 finisher in the 2A District 1 tournament, the Munroe Lady Cats (12-10) softball team was once again in position to use the road to progress forward in the playoffs.
For three years straight, the team has had to make lemonade out of the lemons that Aucilla thrusts at them in the form of dominating softball. Fortunately, the team is immune to the perils of traveling and will again attempt to thwart the Warriors for the right to continue playing softball.
On April 23, Coach Mark Allen and his senior-less team, hit I-10 East for Jacksonville. The team easily disposed of the District 2 winner, First Coast Christian, by an 11-0 score. The two teams played scoreless ball until the Bobcats scored two runs in the top of the third. The team went on to score in each of the next three innings before ending the game after six innings due to the mercy rule.
Hannah Wilde and Anna Jones each led with two hits and Jones also tallied two RBIs. Kadejah Glynn was two for two on the bases. The team was six for eight on stolen bases for the game.
Pitcher Jeri Sloan struck out 10 while walking only one batter. Sloan, a right-handed junior, picked up her ninth win of the season.
The team faced Aucilla Christian, who also won their quarterfinal contest, on Tuesday, April 22. The winner will then play for the right to participate in the 2A State Tournament in Vero Beach. The regional finals will be played on Friday, May 2. Site to be determined.
