Havana swears in new police chief

Tracy Smith was sworn in as Havana’s police chief at the town council meeting Tuesday morning by Town Clerk Shelia Evans.
Terri Paul, President of the Havana Merchants Association, requested that certain streets in town be closed for three upcoming events: Havana Day, May 18; Pumpkin Fest Oct. 12; and Dec. 14, Holiday Festival and Lawn Mower Parade. The motion passed.
The council also passed a motion to adopt Resolution No. 13-01R, a closure permit of certain Havana streets that cross State Route 27 in accordance with Department of Transportation requirement. This is in association with the request of the Havana Merchants Association for their sponsored events.
The council passed a motion to approve April 17, 2013, as Military Family (past and present) and Community Covenant Day. This is a statewide program.
In other business:
n Howard McKinnon, town manager, reported that the storm water project between 10th and 12th avenues is progressing, even though the town has received more than 20 inches of water this month.
n The town’s baseball program is slated to start next month with the same teams.
