GEMS students become published poets

Sixteen Gadsden Elementary Magnet School students are now published authors.
Their poems were selected by Young Writers of America’s panel of educators to be published in a book titled “Award-Winning Young Writers of America.”
The topics the students wrote on were “The World as I See It” and “What my Family Means to Me.”
LaTasha Dilworth-Porter, the students’ English and language arts teacher, said this is her first year entering students in a poetry contest.
“When I received a letter stating that one or more of my students’ poems were chosen for publication, I was excited,” Dilworth-Porter said.  “When the students received their letters and I found out it was 16, I was ecstatic.”
She said she always encourages her student to do their best in everything and to not limit themselves.  She also said the accomplishment proves hard work really pays off.
Eighth-grader Gamiyah Germany, 14, said she was very surprised when she found out her poem was going to be
published.
“This is a great achievement for me, and to now know that I am a published author is just a blessing,” Germany said.
Another student, Treyvious Copeland, a 12-year-old sixth-grader said he was excited and surprised when he found out he was one of
the winners.
“Knowing that I’m a published poet makes me feel that I can do anything that I set my mind to do,” Copeland said.
Dilworth-Porter said a few of her other students who won said they were nervous at first about writing a poem.
She said after they began writing, the process became easier.
She said they enjoyed writing their poems, and some of them said they would love to write more of them.
According to a press release, YWA editors received thousands of submissions for the 2016-2017 Young Writers of America Student Poetry Contest.  Fewer than 20 percent of the entries were selected.
