It won't be such a happy holiday for the 133 people arrested during Operation Seasons Greetings, an annual criminal roundup during which law enforcement agencies team up with parole and probation officials to track down and arrest some of the county's most wanted.

This year was a bumper crop and Lt. Jim Corder of the Narcotics and Vice Unit of the Gadsden County Sheriff's Office said he doesn't ever remember making this many arrests in such a short time.

The names and faces of those arrested during Operation Seasons Greetings were unveiled during a press conference Monday morning at the Gadsden County Sheriff's Office. The arrests were made between Nov. 20 and Dec. 20.

"We made 26 drug arrests, 52 violations of probation, one attempted murder and one first-degree murder of a cold case. The others were various crimes. We also seized five guns and over 2 ounces of cocaine," said Lt. Corder.

The oldest person arrested in this year's operation was a 77-year-old man who violated his probation on a cocaine charge. Corder said that while there were a few teenage arrests, juveniles were not the target of the operation. The targets this year were drug offenders and child support cases.

Corder said this year's event also included monitoring all of the county's 118 sexual predators. He said the team went to all of the physical addresses listed by the predators to make sure they were living at the address on file at the GCSO.

Corder thanked the parole and probation officers for their assistance as well as the police departments from Chattahoochee, Gretna, Quincy and Havana.

"To make this many arrests in this short amount of time is really amazing and without the help and cooperation of these agencies it could not have been accomplished. We made a lot of arrests in the early morning hours and late at night, parole and probation officers accompanied us on many of these arrests," Corder said.

Corder said at least half of those arrested are still in jail because most of the 52 arrested for probation violation have no bond and must sit in jail until they appear before a judge. There were 270 people in a jail built to house 150 people on Monday morning.

"The sheriff said we would make room for them and the people at the jail have done a great job in getting them all settled in," Corder said.

Still, there are over 9,000 warrants that can be served in the county. According to Corder, the number seems unusually high but many are multiple warrants and many of the warrants have expired. But until the warrant list is purged, there is no clear picture of how many warrants are outstanding.

Corder also announced that drug arrests are down in the county.

"Since the dismantling of the 773 Boyz, a hybrid gang operating in the Sawdust area, we've seen a dramatic drop in drug activity where they operated, but we've seen an increase in the amount of gang graffitti popping up, particularly from SUR 13, a Hispanic gang," he said.
